Microsoft Follows Google’s Rules of Trademark Use In PPC

by Barry Wise @ Barry Wise NJ SEO

Microsoft released an announcement today that as of March 3rd, 2011, they will no longer be making editorial investigations into "complaints about trademarks used as keywords to trigger ads on Bing & Yahoo! Search in the United States and Canada." What this basically means is they are allowing anyone to bid on a trademarked term for PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising, even if someone else owns the trademark on that term. They still, however, will investigate text within the ads (note their new "Investigations" policy).

How to Test Your PBNs Before Adding Them to Your Network

First off… Happy New Year!  I’d like to kick things off this year with a technique that I highly recommend you start incorporating as soon as possible: PBN testing. In my last article about debugging backlink results, I alluded to the fact that in order to successfully make sense of SERP movement, you’ll need be 100% sure that your PBNs are clean. SEO is getting increasingly complicated.  Results depend on a large number of interconnected factors.  The only way to truly understand your results is to eliminate as many unknowns as possible.  And that starts with testing your PBNs. By testing your PBNs you’ll find out if your costly PBN investment is actually getting you the return you expect.  At the same time, you’ll get the peace of mind knowing for sure that your PBNs produce positive results, enabling you to focus on the multitude of other ranking factors.

If you’re in local SEO, you’re likely very familiar with local citations and business directory listings. In case you’re not up-to-speed, citations are basically directory listings that include the name, address, and phone number (NAP) of local businesses. Some primary examples of citations are: Yellow Pages, Yahoo Local, Yelp, etc. Citations are the foundation for climbing up rankings in the Map Pack (now known as the 3-Pack or Snack Pack). The more times that Google can match your Google My Business NAP with directory citations, the more you’ll see yourself climbing up the map rankings. But what does this have to do with affiliate SEO? Most SEOs don’t try to rank their affiliate websites locally or in Google Maps. No one searches for “garcinia cambogia chicago” nor do they look for the closest location they can “get rid of acne before prom.” Although you might have no incentive for ranking your affiliate site locally, here are 6 compelling reasons why you should consider adding citations to your backlink blueprint.

The ability of a website to captivate its visitors relies greatly on web design. I’ve often heard it said that a specific year was the culmination of a true “winemaker’s” vintage. But oddly enough, and creating some confusion, I’ve also heard two diametrically opposite explanations expressed. On one hand, there are those who describe it as an absolutely perfect vintage (e.g. 1990, 2005, 2013) living up to a winemaker’s dream (he would have to Continue Reading

Reverse Engineering the Yelp Review Filter Algorithm

by Kevin Callen @ SeeYouSEO Search Engine Optimization

Yelp Review Filter Has Significantly Damaged (and Helped?) Local Businesses

We have heard from a very large number of disgruntled local companies that have been negatively impacted by the Yelp review filter.  The typical story is:

We got a bad review on Yelp.
We asked our clients to post (hopefully, positive) reviews on Yelp.
The good reviews get filtered and are not displayed.
Web searchers only see the bad review(s).
    We are losing business.

In an open forum like Yelp or Google+, there is no validation of legitimacy.   Would the bad reviews pass arbitration?  How many reviews are actually legitimate?  Who knows?  It really does not matter.  Open review forums are here to stay.  These forums do hurt legitimate businesses when targeted by false, fake or exaggerated reviews with a negative agenda.  At the same token, the Yelp review filter has ... The New Threat of Typosquatting (Misspelled Brands) in Social Media

by Barry Wise @ Barry Wise NJ SEO

A recent tweet by Andrew Nystrom of RedBull brought attention to a growing trend we've noticed in Social Media sites such as Twitter and Facebook -- that of Typosquatting. Typosquatting is a form of brandjacking/cybersquatting in which someone registers the misspelling of a brand or trademark term in an attempt to capture traffic from a legitimate well-known entity. In the case of social networks, this is done by using the misspelling of a username, such as in Justin Bieber's case. The real @justinbieber has 5.2 million followers, but a misspelled dupe account of @justinbeiber (the i and e transposed) with zero tweets already has over 16,000 followers.

Por eso mismo Google se ha puesto las pilas y un ejemplo de ello es el anuncio de una nueva funcionalidad en webmaster tools que detecta errores de usabilidad en móviles. If a Country Can’t Reclaim a Username, What Chance Do You Have?

by Barry Wise @ Barry Wise NJ SEO

It was recently reported that the state of Israel purchased the Twitter username @Israel from a private individual named Israel Meléndez for an undisclosed sum, which by some reports may be as much as six figures. You read that right – the Nation of Israel paid for a Twitter username from some guy that runs a porn site in Miami. He gave the prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu his password, and then they handed him a check.

What is Off-Site SEO?

by MattCallen @ SeeYouSEO Search Engine Optimization

Tying it all Together

It is important, when considering how to optimize your website for search engine ranking, to recognize the difference between on-site SEO, vs. off-site SEO.  In the last blog we talked about what we do on the website itself to improve your search engine rankings, or On-Site SEO. As a Northern Virginia SEO company, SeeYouSEO works with local businesses to improve their Google, Bing, and Yahoo rankings and help them get more clients and customers. This week we are focusing on Off-Site or Off-Page SEO.

There is a common misconception that SEO is only about optimizing your website. In reality the majority of SEO work relies on Off-Site SEO.  Once your website is fully optimized with the proper keywords, alt tags, and headings, you can direct your attention to building your presence online on a wider plane. Using other ... Read More »

5 Million Gmails Hacked, Was Yours One?

A couple hours ago I heard that Gmail had been hacked and a list of about 5 million emails had been leaked last night. There is still some conjecture about what happened and how, but what is certain is that this is a list of legitimate emails, and should be taken seriously. How Ivan Ranked and Sold an Amazon Affiliate site for $200k (Interview Case Study)

Use This to Check Your Site’s SSL Before Google Distrusts You

I came across a great new open source website (awesome domain) that will check whether or not the SSL certificate you installed on your website will be deemed obsolete and worthless by Google next month. Just enter your website's URL and it will analyze your SSL certificate - you know, the SSL cert - the thing that adds the padlock and the HTTPS to preface the URL of your website. Yes, Google is also judging you for your cert now, and this news is coming right on the heels of the speculation and buzz around Matt Cutts' speculation and buzz that he'd like to see SSL and HTTPS become a ranking factor in Google search results.
