Film Review: “Split” – A Refreshing Take On The Underdog Sports Story

by Raine0211 @ Soompi

On the outside, “Split” seems like an average, run-of-the-mill, uplifting sports movie about a washed-up coach and his genius protégé. On the outside, the film boasts of top star Yoo Ji Tae, talented David Lee, and precocious Lee Jung Hyun in director and writer Choi Gook Hee’s silver screen debut. On the outside, it has all […]

How to Use Warnings and Errors in Sass Effectively

by Hugo Giraudel @ SitePoint

The following is a short extract from our book, Jump Start Sass, written by Hugo Giraudel and Miriam Suzanne. It's the ultimate beginner's guide to JavaScript. SitePoint Premium members get access with their membership, or you can buy a copy in stores worldwide.

Our incredible journey through Sass is slowly coming to an end, and so far you’ve been doing great! There’s one technical chapter left before we look at project architecture, and then you’ll be fully equipped to write Sass code in your own projects.

Now we’re going to look at warnings and errors. Both form a one-way communication system between the program (in this case, Sass) and the developer (you). If you’re wondering about the point of errors in the CSS world, remember that you already know the answer. Whenever you forget a semicolon or use a function incorrectly, Sass throws an error at you, explaining what you’ve done wrong and how you can fix it, thankfully! It would be a real pain to have to dig into the code to figure out what’s gone wrong.

Sass has long provided a way to emit warnings from stylesheets, but it’s only recently added support to throw errors as well—and for good reason! Over the last few years, Sass has allowed authors to build complex systems to abstract difficult or repetitive patterns and concepts, such as grids. These systems must be able to communicate with authors, stopping the compilation process with a custom error message if anything ever goes wrong.

Both warnings and errors are emitted in the current output channel. When compiling Sass by hand or by using a tool through a command line interface (CLI) such as Grunt or Gulp, the output stream is the console. For tools that include a user interface, such as Codekit or Prepros, it’s likely that they catch and display warnings and errors as part of their interface. Online playgrounds such as CodePen and SassMeister manage to catch errors but not warnings, so don’t be alarmed if you’re unable to test them in there.

Warnings

As has been stated, the ability to emit warnings in Sass is not new. It’s possible to display messages or the value of any SassScript expression to the standard output stream through the @warn directive.

A warning has no impact on the compilationprocess; it does not prevent compiling to pursue or change it in any way. Its only purpose is to display a message in the console.

There are a lot of reasons to use warnings in Sass. Here are a couple, but you’re likely to find your own:

  • informing the user of an assumption made about the code in order to avoid surprise and hard-to-track bugs
  • advising about a deprecated function or mixin as part of a library or framework

Sending a warning is dead simple to do: start with the @warn directive, then state whatever it is. Warnings are usually made to provide some information and context, so they often feature a sentence explaining the situation. That being said, you don’t have to use a string; you can warn with a number, a list, a map—whatever. Here, we print a string:

@warn 'Uh-oh, something looks weird.';

Using a regular CLI client, this warning will emit the following output:

WARNING: Uh-oh, something looks weird.
         on line 1 of /Users/hgiraudel/jump-start-sass/warning.scss

Hey, that’s nice, isn’t it? Although this warning is far from helpful. It says that something looks weird but does not say what, why, or what can be done to stop it from looking weird. We’ll discuss how we can improve on warnings further on.

Let’s move on to a more serious example now that we know how to use he feature. Imagine we have a Sass custom function that attempts to convert a pixel value in em unit:

@function px-to-em($value, $base-font-size: 16px) {
  @return ($value / $base-font-size) * 1em;
}

// Usage
.foo {
  font-size: px-to-em(42px); // 2.625em
}

All good. Now, what happens when passing a unitless number—such as 42—to the function? Maybe you’ve guessed it, but as it’s not quite obvious I’ll give you the answer:

2.625em/px isn’t a valid CSS value.

This happens because you’re trying to perform a calculation between incompatible units (px and em). What we could do to circumvent this issue is assume the unitless value be expressed in pixels and convert it first:

@function px-to-em($value, $base-font-size: 16px) {
  @if unitless($value) {
    @warn 'Assuming value `#{$value}` to be in pixels; attempting to convert it.';
    $value: $value * 1px;

  }

  @return ($value / $base-font-size) * 1em;
}

The function is expecting a value expressed in pixels. We can still make it work with a unitless value; however, we cannot be sure that this is the expected behavior. We can only assume that it’s good enough.

Because we’re assuming what is the correct behavior for our function, it’s important to let the developer know what we’re doing and why. Otherwise it could lead to bugs that are hard to track, which is not
what you should be aiming for.

Another practical example would be to warn against the usage of a deprecated function or mixin. You might have already heard of or used Bourbon, a lightweight mixin library for Sass. Bourbon is actively maintained, and sometimes requires removing helpers from the library. To avoid suddenly breaking a person’s ode, Bourbon warns about future deprecations way before it actually removes mixins:

@mixin inline-block {
  display: inline-block;

  @warn 'The `inline-block` mixin is deprecated and will be removed in the next major version release.';
}

Clever! People who still use the inline-block mixin from Bourbon are aware that the library will remove it completely in the next version, so they know to start updating their codebase to remove the mixin.

The Difference between @warn and @debug

You may or may not be familiar with the @debug directive, which prints the value of a SassScript expression to the standard output stream in the same fashion as @warn. You might be wondering why there are two features performing the same task, and what could possibly be the difference between the two.

How to Write Beautiful Sass

by Miriam Suzanne @ SitePoint

The following is a short extract from our book, Jump Start Sass, written by Hugo Giraudel and Miriam Suzanne. It's the ultimate beginner's guide to Sass. SitePoint Premium members get access with their membership, or you can buy a copy in stores worldwide.

Clean, beautiful code should be a goal in every project. If other developers need to make a change, they should be able to read what is there and understand it. Readable code is the core of maintainability, and the first step towards readable code is a good linter. Like a good spell-checker, the linter should catch all your small typos and formatting mistakes, so it’s not left to others to do so. It’s the first line of defense before a good code review with other developers.

There are several great linters for Sass: scss-lint is a Ruby gem, and the newer sasslint and stylelint, which are npm packages for Node. Both allow you to configure linting rules for your project, such as maximum nesting levels, leading zeros on decimals, and organization of properties in a block. You can even create your own rules as needed.

Sass Guidelines are handy for organizing your project, setting up your linters, establishing naming conventions, and so on. Written by Hugo, it’s an opinionated styleguide for your code; it might not all work for you, but it’s a great place to start.

If you’re using Sass variables, functions, and mixins, it’s recommended that you document how they work. Toolkit authors will find it particularly important, but anyone who has extensive tooling built into their projects should also consider documentation for their team. Another great tool from Hugo is SassDoc, an npm package that parses your Sass comments and generates a beautiful static site with your documentation.

Here’s the SassDoc comment for our tint(..) function in Accoutrement-Colors. It starts with a general description, and then explicitly documents each parameter and the expected return:

 /// Mix a color with `white` to get a lighter tint.
///
/// @param {String | list} $color -
/// The name of a color in your palette,
/// with optional adjustments in the form of `(<function-name>:<args>)`.
/// @param {Percentage} $percentage -
/// The percentage of white to mix in.
/// Higher percentages will result in a lighter tint.
///
/// @return {Color} -
/// A calculated css-ready color-value based on your global color palette.
@function tint(
  $color,
  $percentage
) {
  /* … */
}

Using the default theme (from which there are several to choose, or you can design your own), SassDoc converts that comment into a static website, as shown below.

Holidays, classes and life goals

by Martyna @ Journey Six Feet

I admit feeling a little guilty for not posting for so long. July and  August were crazy! I was finishing my certification program at San Diego Continuing Education in Interactive Media and I spent most of my time trying to crack HTML and CSS, then we went on holiday for a week to Michigan. And I totally left a piece of my heart by one of the million lakes out there. We stayed in this beautiful house built in 1885 in Empire town. We spent holidays with Mr.J parents, his sister with husband and three little ones. It was quite fun to see what does it feel to be around with three little boys. Before we left for our vacation I was worried about my pet rat as she wasn’t doing that great lately and couple days before our trip  we needed to put it to sleep. So that happened. When we came back from vacation I felt that I had too much time and I was wasting it by watching a lot of Youtube videos and I needed to do something about it so I started a new class at the same school. Just this time I took a […]

Make your own down booties on a budget for cold feet.

by Martyna @ Journey Six Feet

There is nothing worse than after a long backpacking day get into a sleeping bag and wake up in the middle of the night with cold feet. That happens to me constantly when we go backpacking not in summer season. I have tried everything: wearing multiple dry socks, wearing grandma’s knitted woolen socks alone and with other socks, but I would still wake up with cold toes. And if feet are cold the whole body will get cold too and is impossible to go back to sleep. So I started thinking about other ways how to get rid of cold feet  in my sleeping bag? A new warmer sleeping bag cost too much and I am fine with the one I have. To buy down booties cost $50-100 and I didn’t want to spend that much money either. Since I know how to sew I decided to use my skills to make my own down booties/slippers. It was a long process as I was looking not only that booties would keep me warm but also that it would look good. I found couple patterns people used before in different backpacking forums but something was not working for me when I […]

SEO As A Multi-Disciplinary Practice

An Introduction to JSX

by Matt Burnett @ SitePoint

When React was first introduced, one of the features that caught most people's attention (and drew the most criticism) was JSX. If you're learning React, or have ever seen any code examples, you probably did a double-take at the syntax. What is this strange amalgamation of HTML and JavaScript? Is this even real code?

Let's take a look at what JSX actually is, how it works, and why the heck we'd want to be mixing HTML and JS in the first place!

What is JSX?

Defined by the React Docs as an "extension to JavaScript" or “syntax sugar for calling React.createElement(component, props, ...children))”, JSX is what makes writing your React Components easy.

JSX is considered a domain-specific language (DSL), which can look very similar to a template language, such as Mustache, Thymeleaf, Razor, Twig, or others.

It doesn't render out to HTML directly, but instead renders to React Classes that are consumed by the Virtual DOM. Eventually, through the mysterious magic of the Virtual DOM, it will make its way to the page and be rendered out to HTML.

How Does it Work?

JSX is basically still just JavaScript with some extra functionality. With JSX, you can write code that looks very similar to HTML or XML, but you have the power of seamlessly mixing JavaScript methods and variables into your code. JSX is interpreted by a transpiler, such as Babel, and rendered to JavaScript code that the UI Framework (React, in this case) can understand.

Don't like JSX? That's cool. It's technically not required, and the React Docs actually include a section on using “React Without JSX”. Let me warn you right now, though, it's not pretty. Don't believe me? Take a look.

JSX:

class SitePoint extends Component {
  render() {
    return (
      <div>My name is <span>{this.props.myName}</span></div>
    )
  }
}

React Sans JSX:

class SitePoint extends Component {
  render() {
    return React.createElement(
      "div",
      null,
      "My name is",
      React.createElement(
        "span",
        null,
        this.props.myName
      )
    )
  }
}

Sure, looking at those small example pieces of code on that page you might be thinking, "Oh, that's not so bad, I could do that." But could you imagine writing an entire application like that?

The example is just two simple nested HTML elements, nothing fancy. Basically, just a nested Hello World. Trying to write your React application without JSX would be extremely time consuming and, if you're like most of us other developers out here working as characters in DevLand™, it will very likely quickly turn into a convoluted spaghetti code mess. Yuck!

Using frameworks and libraries and things like that are meant to make our lives easier, not harder. I'm sure we've all seen the overuse and abuse of libraries or frameworks in our careers, but using JSX with your React is definitely not one of those cases.

June Playlist – Backpack Tunes

by Martyna @ Journey Six Feet

Music is my passion. So I decided to create monthly playlists starting with June. June was a crazy month I wanted to do and to see so much but with a new job and classes, not much free time was left. This playlist consists mostly of slower songs, for reminding that even your daily routine is just sprinting and accomplishing things there is always a time to go to the beach to see a sunset. *** Muzika – mano aistra.

How to Set Up Airbrake Error Monitoring for Your JavaScript App

by M. David Green @ SitePoint

This article was sponsored by Airbrake. Thank you for supporting the partners who make SitePoint possible.

We're all very careful about testing our code before putting it out into a production environment, right? We use test-driven development or build out elegant suites of unit tests, functional tests, and integration tests. We run our products through all the likely environments where it may be deployed repeatedly every time we make a change to our code. We test every possible path a user could follow on every conceivable browser.

Right?

Well, ok, none of us is perfect. But at least our users are always diligent about reporting every error they encounter, and providing detailed information about exactly how to reproduce those errors so they're easy to track down and fix.

Right?

Yeah, I didn't think so.

Error Monitoring to the Rescue!

Thankfully there are services out there to help us diagnose and resolve issues that may have slipped through the infinitesimal cracks in our diligent quality testing procedures.

I'm talking about remote error monitoring services. If you haven't heard of them before, remote error monitoring services can track and report on actual errors that users encounter in real time as they happen, before the user even has a chance to file a vague or misleading bug report.

In addition, they can provide you with a range of useful details about how the error came about: what browser version the user was running, what account was logged in, what operating system was being used, any session data, a backtrace of the error itself, as well as any custom tags you might have inserted into your code to help identify issues.

Getting Started With Error Monitoring

There are a number of services and options in the market, but a good comprehensive one is Airbrake.io. They've been around for a long time in internet years, so you may remember them as Hoptoad back before they changed their name in 2011.

Airbrake also supports a very broad range of back-end and front end languages and environments from Ruby and PHP to .NET and Node.js. They also offer native integration with most of the popular code management and deployment services such as GitHib, JIRA, Bitbucket, and Slack. It's likely that whatever you're working with, they have the tools you need to get started quickly and easily. Their reporting interface is also clean and easy to navigate, so you can start generating actionable information from your deployed production code quickly.

Implementing the Airbrake.io code into your product is straightforward. To get started, you can create an account at Airbrake.io that's free for the first 14 days while you kick the tires, with no credit card required during the trial period.

When you create your first project, you'll be provided with a range of options with pre-written integration code in over 20 languages. As an example, let's say we want to use JavaScript end-to-end, and have an Express based Node.js api service on the back end.

Monitoring an Express App

Let's set up a quick example to show how easy integrating error monitoring with Airbrake can be. Assuming we already have node installed, in the terminal we can create a simple Express app to monitor using the Express Generator, which we can install with yarn or npm:

yarn global add express-generator

We can then run it to create a bare-bones Express app:

Slot Canyon Hike in Anza Borrego Desert

by Martyna @ Journey Six Feet

Anza Borrego desert is one of my favorite places to visit. There are miles of trails, hidden places and gems with unique landscapes, plants, rocks and much more, just have time to explore all of it. When I found out that there is a slot canyon I had to see myself. The slot canyon trail  is an easy family friendly hike (0.8-mile length), but if you are sensitive to high temperatures like I am, I would suggest visiting this place in winter or spring when temperatures are not as high. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen protection and a good camera to take lots of pictures of the beautiful canyon. The slot canyon is marked on the map but it is still quite challenging to get there, so before you go, make sure to plan your trip ahead. From Highway 78 East, turn left on Buttes Pass dirt road and follow till the end, you will see a little “parking lot” where you should leave your car and start the hike. The entrance of the trail is easy to miss but generally you should go down and start hiking to the left if that make sense. Ok, enough boring introductions time to get real […]

Backpacking thru Trans-Catalina Trail in Catalina Island: cactuses, buffalos, rain and more!

by Martyna @ Journey Six Feet

Thanksgiving is coming that means it is time to plan another backpacking/adventure trip. Every year me and Mr.J instead of stuffing our bellies with food we go and explore new places. I started looking around what we will do this year ( it is always kind of last minute planning) but I remembered that I never shared what we did last year. So last Thanksgiving I celebrated by thru backpacking Trans- Catalina Trail. Trans-Catalina trail is located in the Catalina island around 22 miles ( 35 km) south of Los Angeles. The only way to reach the island is by a helicopter or plane ( if you are rich), by a ferry or with your own boat! The island is 22 miles (35 km) length and 8 (13 km) miles across at the greatest width. I took some backpacking diary/notes during this backpacking adventure and I will share them here. It was one of the most adventurous backpacking trips we went on. I enjoyed that we did not need to pack too much food, there are restaurants on the way. The campsites were tidy and some of them had toilets and running water. Catalina Island is full of wonderful plants […]

Kwaaymii Point – An Easy Hike For Everyone

by Martyna @ Journey Six Feet

I constantly look for new hikes in San Diego. Sometimes it can be frustrating due to the location: in the North – Los Angeles, in the South – Mexico, East – dessert, West – water. Usually, all the cool trails are couple hours away from where we live, but all so worth to visit. Here and there I “get” itchy feet to go somewhere, sometimes I  just want an easy and flat hike, other times full body torturing experience. Recently I was browsing online looking for new trails in San Diego and came across to Kwaaymii Point in Cleveland National Forest. It caught my attention that the spot is popular among hang gliders and my first thought was, that it should be easily accessible with great views of the desert and mountains and I was right! Kwaaymii Point trail is on the Pacific Crest Trail and it makes everyone who is into hiking a little more excited  (in this case it was Mr. J). Kwaaymii Point Trail is only 0.5-mile length and flat so it is great for children and elder people. We parked the car at the Pioneer Mail Picknic Area and started walking towards the sign of PCT.  Since it was an easy and short stroll […]
