Glen Arbor Wines: where the two peninsulas meet

by editor @ Glen Arbor Sun

Lissa Edwards can remember Glen Arbor before it had sidewalks, or much asphalt. “Everything smelled like hot sand and sumac,” she laughs, over a glass of Chardonnay. “Every once in a while a certain smell takes me back to those days. I spent every summer in Glen Arbor in the 1960s. This town is deep in my DNA.”

Markow and Norris

by Jeff Timlin @ Chasen Galleries

American glass artists Eric Markow and Thom Norris met in 1994 in Northern Virginia. The two started collaborating on organically inspired stained glass window commissions for the next decade. Over the years as glass flame work and glass fusing became more popular, Markow & Norris began several years of experimentation to develop handwoven glass.

Robert Madvin

by Jeff Timlin @ Chasen Galleries

Robert Madvin’s primary inspiration derives from nature; his most prominent glass sculpture series called Pohacu, meaning “rock” or “stone”. Ancient Hawaiians would stack stones upon one another to create rock sculptures used as navigational instruments throughout the islands. Robert encountered some of these organic tools while hiking various trails in Hawaii and developed them into his glass stacked stone sculptures being shown at various art shows and galleries throughout the US and Canada.

Dorothy Fagan

by Jeff Timlin @ Chasen Galleries

During my Artist in Residency at Musee de La Grande Vigne in Dinan, I became fascinated by the juxtaposition of ancient stone structures and vital new life.

Vibrant people flourished in outdoor cafes alongside Medieval buildings. Profusions of blooming flowers spilled from every window. Lush stalks of lavender thistle blossomed in a old, dried thicket inside the protective walls of the ancient, abbey courtyard at Lehon.

It was used primarily in the 1800s and beginning of the 1900s for the early pioneers of the area. This quiet location holds the final resting-place of several Civil War soldiers.”

Luigi Fumagalli

by Jeff Timlin @ Chasen Galleries

Luigi Fumagalli's western subjects - abstract chess variations, knights, marionettes and horses - are full of motion and excitement graphically stronger and bolder in color than similar themes by Picasso. His Oriental subjects, the colorful Kabuki and gentle geishas of Japan, are rendered with passionate, Latin sensuousness. His abstracts evoke tremendous vitality conveyed by the colors, compositions, and movement that betray his Latin temperament.

Glass artist James Wilbat studied water color and drawing as a youngster — as early as the 5th grade. He continued his love of the arts at Illinois State University where he received a B.S. in Fine Arts in 1977. Although he had majored in ceramics in undergraduate school, he encountered glass blowing in his senior year, and he knew he had to learn this unusual craft. In 1980 he completed a Master of Fine Art degree in Design from the University of Kansas.

The art of Patricia Laspino exudes a serene beauty that transcends style or period. She forges a synergistic relationship between art, popular culture, and scientific illustration. Because she considers herself "an artist/scientist", her work exhibits a strong fidelity to nature.

by Jeff Timlin @ Fine Artists | Chasen Galleries

Elaine Elinsky says, "I am a contemporary, impressionistic oil painter living and working in Virginia. I use color and brush strokes to create still life and landscape paintings. My brother is a well-known stained glass artist in England. His studio in London produces both traditional and contemporary windows for public and private spaces.
