Ethics: Clarifying terrifying terms

by @ SPJ - Quill Headlines

Ricky John Best, Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche and Micah David-Cole Fletcher were stabbed May 26 when they attempted to stop a man from harassing two teens with racist and anti-Muslim rants on a train in Portland, Oregon. Best and Namkai-Meche died.

A lot of the attention on social media following the attack centered on the news media’s use or avoidance of the word “terrorism” in discussing the events. People rightly pointed out that media organizations are quick to bring up the words “terro...

Society of Professional Journalists executive director to leave after 12 years

INDIANAPOLIS – Joe Skeel, executive director of the Society of Professional Journalists, will be leaving his position, effective Dec. 1, to assume the executive director role at the Indiana State Bar Association.

Skeel has been the top staff person for SPJ and the supporting Sigma Delta Chi Foundation since 2009. He edited the association’s magazine, Quill, for four years before being promoted to executive director.

“I will be forever thankful for the opportunity to work for SPJ and the SDX Foundation,” said Skeel, who intends to remain an SPJ member. “The accomplishments we have had, and the friendships made, will stay with me forever. It’s not easy to leave, but the decision was made easier by knowing how far we have come, and what we are on the verge of becoming.”

SPJ President Lynn Walsh said Skeel’s leadership and support will be missed.

“Joe moved SPJ to financial stability, delivered on leadership’s vision and built the bridges that help us get to where we want to be,” she said. “We wish him great success in his new role.”

SPJ will launch a national search for Skeel’s successor. Details will be finalized in early September after the SPJ and SDX Foundation boards meet during the Excellence in Journalism 2017 conference in Anaheim, Calif.

SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to informing citizens; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and fights to protect First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press. Support excellent journalism and fight for your right to know. Become a member, give to the Legal Defense Fund, or give to the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Each year, Society of Professional Journalists delegates vote on resolutions submitted by members on topics of importance to the society. These resolutions are voted on by delegates during the closing business session at the Excellence in Journalism annual conference.

Here are the resolutions that were approved during EIJ17 in Anaheim, Calif.:

Resolution No. 1
The Trump Administration and the Press
Submitted by Resolutions Committee
Delegate Action: Approved

WHEREAS the role of the news media in a democratic society requires journalists to question authority and hold the powerful accountable to the people;

WHEREAS journalists and media organizations routinely reported on actions of previous presidents, including Barack Obama and George W. Bush, that put them in unflattering lights and drew criticism of their administrations from editorial writers and opinion columnists;

WHEREAS President Donald J. Trump has described the news media as an “enemy of the people” and has said journalists “don’t like their country”;

WHEREAS the president and members of his administration persistently characterize members of the media as dishonest and crooked;

WHEREAS as recently as September 3, 2017, the president’s Environmental Protection Agency personally attacked the credibility of reporters for the Associated Press;

WHEREAS the president and several of his advisers use pejorative descriptions of journalists and news media to undermine the legitimacy of the press and its role in civil, democratic society;

WHEREAS demagogues throughout modern history have worked first to destroy the credibility of news media to enhance their power and execute their agendas;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Society of Professional Journalists in convention in Anaheim, California on September 9, 2017, condemns in the harshest possible terms the corrosive actions and words of the Trump administration toward the news media and journalists;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Society asks members of Congress and other public officials to remind the administration of the vital role the First Amendment and the press play in our system of government;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Society encourages journalists not to rise to the social media bait distributed by President Trump and others who choose to mislead the public about the news media and to refrain from responding in kind.

Resolution No. 2
Calling on Journalists to
Oppose the Mandated Clearance Culture
Submitted by: FOI Committeemember Kathryn Foxhall
Delegate action: Approved

WHEREAS the Society of Professional Journalists has decried the harmful cultural norm of prohibiting public employees and private experts from communicating with reporters;

WHEREAS SPJ recognizes that public information officers play an important role and often provide critical assistance to journalists;
WHEREAS the Society recognizes the legitimate need for organizations to withhold certain information for legal or proprietary reasons;
WHEREAS, nevertheless, SPJ has clearly stated in previous resolutions its concerns regarding the harm done by restrictions on access, including mandates that reporters always go through PIOs;

WHEREAS SPJ has demonstrated its leadership on this form of censorship in letters to President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump signed by scores of journalism organizations and other groups, by meeting with White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest in 2015 and in a letter to the New York Times in 2016;

WHEREAS former SPJ president and Kennesaw State University professor Carolyn Carlson has conducted, with SPJ’s sponsorship, seven surveys over five years that show “Censorship by PIO” has become pervasive;

WHEREAS these surveys reveal both a lack of concern about the consequences of enforced silence and a chilling assumption by officials that this is appropriate;

WHEREAS these controls on public access threaten the free flow of information essential to a democratic society;

WHEREAS these restrictions on access pose a grave risk to the public welfare;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the Society of Professional Journalists, meeting in convention in Anaheim, California, on September 9, 2017, calls on journalists to put the public’s need to know above the professional desire not to anger official sources.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that journalists should resist official efforts to make reporters nothing more than stenographers and openly oppose restrictions on access.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that SPJ calls on all journalists, journalism groups, publishers, editors, journalism schools and freedom of information groups to start and continue discussions on eliminating these restrictions and to explain to the public the hazards to society posed by these restrictions.

Resolution No. 3
In praise of New Voices
Submitted by: Resolutions Committee
Delegate action: Approved

WHEREAS the Student Press Law Center has since 2015 created volunteer coalitions across the United States called New Voices to expand the free press guarantees of the First Amendment to student journalists and the student press at the high school and college level;

WHEREAS, as SPLC noted in its grant report to the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation, “the need for New Voices has grown more urgent after the heated anti-media rhetoric of the last national political campaign;

WHEREAS the New Voices effort yielded resounding success in 2017, resulting in freedom of the student press being guaranteed by law in Nevada, Vermont and Rhode Island;
WHEREAS North Dakota expanded the protections of its 2015 free student press law by enacting another law adding protection for student media advisers from retaliation;

WHEREAS the 2017 legislative action in these states followed similar laws in Illinois and Maryland and brought to 13 the number of states with statutes or education codes that protect student journalists’ right of free expression;

WHEREAS the American Bar Association House of Delegates unanimously endorsed support for the movement for prohibiting the censorship of student journalism;

WHEREAS these victories could not have been accomplished without the organizing and legal expertise of the Student Press Law Center and its grassroots volunteers;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Society of Professional Journalists, meeting in convention in Anaheim, California on September 9, 2017, commends the work of the SPLC and its former executive director Frank LoMonte for their untiring efforts to undo the ill effects of the 1988 Hazelwood decision of the U.S. Supreme Court.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Society endorses the continued efforts of the SPLC and its new executive director, Hadar Harris, to take the fight for student free expression to all 50 states.

Resolution No. 4
Commending journalists covering hurricanes Harvey and Irma
Submitted by: Resolutions committee
Delegate action: Approved

WHEREAS Hurricane Harvey has been a record-setting storm that caused catastrophic damage to the fourth-largest city in the United States;

WHEREAS Hurricane Irma promises to be another devastating storm to U.S. territories and states;

WHEREAS journalists based in Houston and Miami and from other outlets around the country leapt into action to cover the story;

WHEREAS the men and women of print, broadcast and online outlets stayed on the job in the face of some danger, as even their own offices, studios and homes flooded;

WHEREAS much work remains to be done, reporting on the aftermath of the storms and how affected cities and states will recover over the course of the coming days, weeks and years;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Society of Professional Journalists, meeting in convention in Anaheim, California, on September 9, 2017, commends the extraordinary journalists covering the impact of these dangerous storms for their fortitude, integrity and bravery in the performance of their duties.

Resolution No. 5
Recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Public Broadcasting Act
Submitted by Alex Veeneman, Ethics Committee member, blogger
Delegate Action: Approved

WHEREAS The Public Broadcasting Act was signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on November 21, 1967;

WHEREAS Johnson said that the Act would help enrich the spirit of the United States;
WHEREAS The Act created the Corporation for Public Broadcasting;

WHEREAS the Corporation for Public Broadcasting has been crucial in the development of public media;

WHEREAS federal funding for CPB is less than one-tenth of one percent of the United States’ federal budget, or $1.35 per citizen;

WHEREAS the people of public media, from member stations to organizations including PBS, NPR, Public Radio International, American Public Media and the Public Radio Exchange have made a positive contribution to the cultural and civic life of the United States;

WHEREAS public media has had a significant impact on the educational goals and prospects of American children;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Society of Professional Journalists, meeting in convention in Anaheim, California, on September 9, 2017, hereby recognizes the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Public Broadcasting Act.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Society recognizes the dedication of all those who work in public media, including SPJ members employed by public media, and the valuable contributions public media have made to American life.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Society believes continued federal funding for public broadcasting is necessary to the enhancement of the democratic and cultural well-being of the United States.

Resolution No. 6:
Thanking SPJ Associate Executive Director Chris Vachon
Submitted by: SPJ Resolutions Committee
Delegate action: Approved

WHEREAS during the past 14 years, Associate Executive Director Chris Vachon has offered
SPJ members and staff consistent encouragement, cooperation and reminders to “make good choices”;

WHEREAS Vachon has produced countless conventions that went off without a hitch (OK, so maybe one or two hitches but not many);

WHEREAS the SPJ community can always count on Vachon to provide the best dance moves at the EIJ dance every year;

WHEREAS she has helped build fantastic partnerships with other journalism organizations, such as the Google News Lab training that has been shared with journalists around the country;

WHEREAS Vachon has successfully organized and recruited trainers for Google tools programs, perhaps without a total understanding of what data viz even is;

WHEREAS Vachon has been a calming, mother hen presence at headquarters while still kicking butt;

WHEREAS Vachon has been the primary force behind the smashingly successful SPJ Day of Giving program, which raised oodles and oodles of dollars;

WHEREAS Vachon frequently watches her son’s college basketball games on whatever mobile device will pick up a signal;

WHEREAS Vachon has been a dedicated Society of Professional Journalists employee, always helpful to members and the board and she will be greatly missed;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the delegates of the Society of Professional Journalists meeting in convention at Anaheim, California, on September 9, 2017, thank Chris Vachon for her dedicated service to the Society during her term as associate executive director of the nation's oldest and most broad-based journalism organization.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the journalists in attendance at EIJ17 stand to give Chris a rousing round of applause and a hearty hear, hear for a job well done.

Resolution No. 7:
Thanking SPJ Executive Director Joe Skeel
Submitted by: SPJ Resolutions Committee
Delegate action: Approved

WHEREAS Executive Director Joe Skeel’s leadership since 2009 has led the Society to become more strategic and focused in its mission;

WHEREAS Executive Director Skeel has helped SPJ remain financially sound in a time when money for journalists and news organizations has been in flux;

WHEREAS Skeel has accomplished financial solvency by pursuing innovative ideas that have paid off;

WHEREAS Skeel has been a rock that the Society’s presidents, boards, members and staff can really lean on;

WHEREAS Skeel can provide thorough explanations to all board questions, whether they are about Robert's Rules of Order or the technical options about how the board has to proceed;

WHEREAS Skeel has shown exceptional vision;

WHEREAS Skeel has built a tremendous team at the Society’s headquarters;

WHEREAS he has shown the foresight to then stay out the team’s way;

WHEREAS Joe’s wife Becky has shown great patience with his never-ending project to finish their second story;

WHEREAS Joe has continued the tradition of the late Terry Harper as an unofficial ambassador for Maker’s Mark -- there might even (wink, wink) be a bottle in his office;

WHEREAS he has led the Society and the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation to create a healthy financial reserve that will benefit the organizations for years to come;

WHEREAS he has performed wonderfully (and sweat-ily) in a gorilla suit for the sake of Day of Giving;

WHEREAS Joe’s professional conduct while representing SPJ and American journalists in North Korea in 2007, did not cause an international incident and likely prevented an SPJ officer from almost certain incarceration;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the delegates of the Society of Professional Journalists meeting in convention September 9, 2017, in Anaheim, California, thank Joe Skeel for his dedicated service to the Society while acting as executive director of the nation's oldest and most broad-based journalism organization.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the journalists in attendance stand to give Joe a rousing round of applause and a hearty cheer for an excellent near-decade as SPJ’s executive director.

Resolution No.8:
Thanking SPJ staff
Submitted by: SPJ Resolutions Committee
Delegate action: Approved

WHEREAS the staff created a superlative national journalism conference in collaboration with the Radio Television Digital News Association, National Association of Hispanic Journalists and Native American Journalists Association while dealing with the impending loss of their managers and colleagues, Executive Director Joe Skeel and Associate Executive Director Chris Vachon;

WHEREAS the inspiring display of “talent, truth and energy” of Excellence in Journalism 2017 would not be possible without the SPJ staff’s deep knowledge, tireless energy, two-way radios, running shoes and Twitter #hashtags;

WHEREAS the SPJ staff continues to expand the technical capabilities of SPJ in exciting new ways;

WHEREAS the SPJ staff’s high level of professionalism, skill, ingenuity, nimbleness, and ability to keep the EIJ17 events running smoothly on very little sleep.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Society of Professional Journalists, meeting in convention in Anaheim, California, on September 9, 2017, thanks the SPJ staff for all its work and urges them to move quickly to prepare for EIJ18 in Baltimore, Maryland.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that journalists in attendance at EIJ17 give the SPJ staff a rousing round of applause and loud “thank you.”

Resolution No. 9:
Thanking SPJ President Lynn Walsh

Effects of PI3Kβ overexpression in the hippocampus on synaptic plasticity and spatial learning

Effects of PI3Kβ overexpression in the hippocampus on synaptic plasticity and spatial learning

Molecular Brain

Previous studies have shown that a family of phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3Ks) plays pivotal roles in the brain; in particular, we previously reported that knockout of the β isoform of PI3K (PI3Kβ) in mice impaired synaptic plasticity and reduced behavioral flexibility. To further examine the role of PI3Kβ in synaptic plasticity and hippocampus-dependent behavioral tasks we overexpressed p110β, the catalytic subunit of PI3Kβ, in the hippocampal CA1 region. We found that the overexpression of p110β impairs NMDA receptor-dependent long-term depression (LTD) and hippocampus-dependent spatial learning in the Morris water maze (MWM) task. In contrast, long-term potentiation (LTP) and contextual fear memory were not affected by p110β overexpression. These results, together with the previous knockout study, suggest that a critical level of PI3Kβ in the hippocampus is required for successful induction of LTD and normal learning.

Pros and Cons of Premium Website Templates…

by Owner @ Google Maps Marketing – Expert Local SEO Company

Advantages of using Website Templates

What you see is what you get. With a readymade website template, you don’t have to imagine what the finished product will look like, whether the web developer you’ve chosen has understood your requirements, whether your website will have to go through several changes and iterations before you’re satisfied with the end-product. The website template can be customized to your requirements by changing the colors, pictures and text so that it ends up looking quite different from the original.

1. Speed. Time is money. Your website will be up-and-running within a fraction of the time it takes to develop a custom website – provided, of course, that you have the content and the pictures ready to customize your website template to suit you. A custom-designed website can take months to develop, depending on its complexity. Compare that time-frame to the few weeks or even a few days for a website template to become a … Continue reading

Brain Anatomy Changes Associated with Persistent Neuropathic Pain Following Spinal Cord Injury | Cerebral Cortex | Oxford Academic

Brain Anatomy Changes Associated with Persistent Neuropathic Pain Following Spinal Cord Injury | Cerebral Cortex | Oxford Academic

OUP Academic

Persistent neuropathic pain commonly occurs following spinal cord injury (SCI). It remains one of the most challenging management problems in this condition. In order to develop more effective treatments, a better understanding of the neural changes associated with neuropathic SCI pain is required. The aim of this investigation was to use diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to determine if persistent neuropathic pain following SCI is associated with changes in regional brain anatomy and connectivity. In 23 subjects with complete thoracic SCI, 12 with below-level neuropathic pain and 11 without pain, and 45 healthy control subjects, a series of whole-brain DTI scans were performed. The mean diffusivity (MD) of each voxel was calculated and values compared between groups. This analysis revealed that neuropathic pain following SCI is associated with significant differences in regional brain anatomy. These anatomical changes were located in pain-related regions as well as regions of the classic reward circuitry, that is, the nucleus accumbens and orbitofrontal, dorsolateral prefrontal, and posterior parietal cortices. The right posterior parietal cortex projected to most regions that displayed an anatomical change. Analysis of the fiber tracts connecting areas of MD differences revealed no significance differences in MD values between the SCI pain, SCI no pain, and control groups.

Web Browsers Change Handling of Non-HTTPS Websites

by Owner @ Google Maps Marketing – Expert Local SEO Company

Web browsers have changed the way they handle non-HTTPS websites, and more changes are on the way. If you already have our Whole-Site SSL add-on, you’re covered. Otherwise, read on to see how these changes affect your website, and what to do about it.

Web browsers Chrome and Firefox, which account for more than 70% of web traffic, have started warning users to varying degrees when they visit non-HTTPS websites, and those warnings will become more prominent over time.

Below are examples of how these browsers display websites that have HTTPS and those that do not.

First, this is how your customers will see your site if you add Whole-Site SSL:

Next, this is how your customers will see your site today if you don’t have Whole-Site SSL:

That looks harmless, but if a visitor clicks the “i” for more info, they’ll see something like this:

Rebecca Baker installed as 2017-2018 SPJ President

by @ SPJ News

Rebecca Baker, SPJ National President, (203) 640-3904, rebecca.baker.ny@gmail.com
Anna Gutierrez, Communications Coordinator, 317-920-4785, agutierrez@spj.org

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Rebecca Baker became the 101st president of the Society of Professional Journalists during the President’s Installation Banquet at the 2017 Excellence in Journalism conference in Anaheim, California. She is the first SPJ national president from New York City in 35 years.

Baker is the deputy head of news at the New York Daily News in New York City. Previously, she was the deputy editor-in-chief of the New York Law Journal, the largest daily legal newspaper in the country.

“SPJ is in a unique place to help build the public’s trust in journalists,” Baker said.

Baker challenged each member of SPJ to hold a discussion with the public about journalism. Outreach has never been more important, she said.

“Our goal is to send SPJ members into at least 100 schools by this time next year,” Baker said, while announcing a Press for Education campaign. “If we can reach kids, we can reach the future consumers of our news.”

She takes the reigns from Lynn Walsh, investigative executive producer at NBC 7 San Diego, who served as SPJ president for the past year.

“It’s talking to non-journalists that’s been a favorite of mine throughout the year. We need to engage the public and talk to them,” Walsh said. “The threat against the First Amendment is very real. We need to continue to act and let the public know what these freedoms mean and what it would be like without them.”

Baker joined SPJ in 2000 and currently serves on SPJ’s finance committee, membership task force and the SDX Foundation Board of Directions, which supports the educational mission of SPJ. She previously served as president-elect. In addition, Baker was named outstanding member of 2010-2011 for her work as the president of The Deadline Club, SPJ’s New York City chapter.

Her work as a courts/crime reporter led to appearances on several cable network television shows, including "American Greed," "On the Case with Paula Zahn" and "Nancy Grace." She also was a regular guest on “Crime and Justice with Dan Schorr,” a New York-based radio program and podcast.
Baker graduated magna cum laude in journalism from Quinnipiac University in 2003, summa cum laude in communication from Carlow University (formerly known as Carlow College) in 1995 and was the valedictorian of the 1991 graduating class of Jeannette High School in Jeannette, Pennsylvania.

Coverage of the 2017 Excellence in Journalism conference is available from EIJ News. EIJ17 is a joint conference between SPJ, Radio Television Digital News Association, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Native American Journalists Association.

SPJ delegates approve smaller board, changes to regional director positions

by @ SPJ News

Contacts:
Lynn Walsh, SPJ National President, 614-579-7937, lynn.k.walsh@gmail.com
Jennifer Royer, SPJ Communications Strategist, 317-361-4134, jroyer@spj.org

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Society of Professional Journalists voted to change the way SPJ governs itself, including shrinking its Board of Directors to nine positions and removing regional directors from the national board.

Voting delegates approved the changes during the closing business session at the Excellence in Journalism 2017 annual conference.

The national board recommended the bylaws changes, in an effort to attract qualified leaders without barriers such as geography, job title, etc. In addition, a smaller board will be more nimble.

“These changes will help SPJ better execute its mission and serve its members,” said SPJ National President Lynn Walsh. “A smaller board will be best suited to produce shared short- and long-term strategies for SPJ’s vitality and viability into the future. This is just a first step toward those goals, but it is an important one.”

The vote comes after a year of self-examination by the current Board of Directors and a Governance Task Force that was charged with studying the issue.

With the approved bylaws changes, SPJ will be governed by a board of nine members, down from 23, to include:
• Three officers, including a president, president-elect and secretary-treasurer, each to be elected for one year.
• Four at-large directors, each to be elected for two years with staggered terms.
• Two appointed directors, each to be selected by the board to serve one-year terms, to provide specific expertise.

Regional directors, meanwhile, would continue to serve in the same capacity, but as non-board members to be known as regional coordinators.

Under this new structure, the SPJ board will continue to implement long-standing board responsibilities, as laid out in existing bylaws. Additionally, it will:
• Draft and enact a strategic plan for three to five years, setting annual goals to ensure that work toward planned priorities remain on track.
• Adopt a new organizational chart to ensure fruitful communication between board members and SPJ’s many constituencies, including chapters and communities.

The task force invited members to provide feedback and ask questions in various ways in the weeks and months leading up to the vote at EIJ17. It also created an online Frequently Asked Questions about the proposals.

SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to informing citizens; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and fights to protect First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press. ANAHEIM, Calif. – Marcella Mercer and Calla Kessler of the Lincoln Journal Star received the MOEy Best in Show award for their story "A mom for all ages: Hours from Whiteclay, caring for kids with fetal alcohol disorders."

Each year, student journalists compete regionally in print, TV, radio and online categories. Mercer and Kessler are the regional winners in Feature Writing, Large School Division.

First-place winners advance to compete nationally and are eligible for the MOEy. The best in show award is chosen from more than 4,000 entries in the Society of Professional Journalists 2016 Mark of Excellence Awards competition.

The story and photos by Mercer and Kessler profile a South Dakota mother who adopted nine Native American children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

The judges said, “This story is a masterpiece. I see evidence of in-depth reporting. It takes time to get this sort of detail. Lead choice is perfect.”

At the national level, judges said, “Beautifully written narrative about a complex topic. You can tell the reporter spent time with the family to understand the ‘day in the life.’ This story kept my interest from beginning to end.”

The award was announced during the Student Union at Excellence in Journalism 2017 in Anaheim, California.

Details on the governance structure update

by @ SPJ Leads

"It's a huge responsibility to be trusted to tell someone's story," - Kristen Cook, in her resignation letter to the Arizona Daily Star.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Underreporting in rural areas is a nationwide phenomenon. SPJ member Al Cross says this is a problem because rural reporting is rarely seen as the most critical mission. 20 percent of the nation's population lives in rural areas, so not having anyone to cover government meetings or hold officials accountable can cause bigger problems.

Hurricanes Harvey and Irma really showed the power of local journalists as the eyes and ears of the community. That's why Google News announced a new focus on hyperlocal and community news with a feature called Community Updates.

Report for America aims to place 1,000 journalists in local newsrooms in the next five years. This program is similar to organizations like Teach for America. Report for America doesn't get government funding, but it is being treated as a national service project.

A recent survey, conducted by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, shows that 37 percent of those surveyed can't name any of the rights guaranteed under the First Amendment.

ETHICS ESSENTIALS

SPJ Ethics Chairman Andrew Seaman writes about terrifying terms in the latest edition of Quill. "The inconsistency of their uses, their vagueness and their divisiveness should make journalists and news organizations question their use of the words 'terrorism' and 'terrorist."' Seaman says the purpose of journalism is to provide people with accurate, reliable, truthful information, but there is a problem if people spend most of their time debating words, or misuse of words, in that reporting. Read more here.

SPJ QUICK FIX

Here's a look at the nine resolutions passed at EIJ 2017.

By fall of 2019, SPJ's national board will shrink from 23 members to nine - thanks to Society delegates passing bylaws amendments during EIJ17. The streamlined board will consist of three officers, four at-large directors and two appointed directors. Information about the restructure process and a transition timeline can be found online.

Best practices for covering a mass shooting

by @ SPJ Leads

"It's important that parents and citizens really lobby for media literacy to be taught in schools, starting with kindergarten. We're doing our students a real disservice if we don't teach them to become critical consumers of the media." — Jean Kilbourne, author and speaker.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

From live blogs to mobile alerts, some journalists are saying it might be time to rethink standard articles for live coverage and breaking news with different approaches to providing information.

All kinds of local reporting -- from day-to-day city hall coverage to world-changing investigations like in "Spotlight" -- is faced with extinction. In her latest column, Margaret Sullivan writes about how the local news crisis is only getting worse.

SPJ Ethics Committee Chairman Andrew Seaman says Puerto Rico's situation is not up for debate. In his latest blog post, Seaman reminds journalists to give voice to the voiceless: "Transmit the devastation. Talk to residents, first responders, doctors and anyone else who is able to articulate what their daily lives are like in the wake of the hurricane."

In light of St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Mike Faulk's arrest last week, media lawyers and news executives give some advice about how news organizations can defend journalists who are attacked or arrested while covering news.

ETHICS ESSENTIALS

SPJ Ethics Committee Chairman Andrew Seaman speaks with CNN's Brian Stelter about the ethics of news organizations reporting claims of responsibility in the wake of mass shootings and attacks. He says journalists and news organizations should report what is known, what isn't known and what is known to be false information, and shun any type of speculation.

Google Panda Update: Everything We Know About Panda 4.2

by Owner @ Google Maps Marketing – Expert Local SEO Company

Too late for new changes…

Unfortunately, once Google begins rolling out one of these updates, it is too late to apply changes that will have any effect during the rolling out phase period. As we have seen previously, these updates have a cut-off date and any changes made after this date will be applied to the next refresh or update.

That said, it is always a good idea to be continually updating content. But if you have been previously impacted by Panda and did not make the changes to increase quality yet, you will need to wait for the next one.

Likewise, if you are now negatively impacted by the Panda algo this time around, you will need to wait for the next update or refresh.

Drone journalism ethics

by @ SPJ Leads

"But no country can have good government, or a healthy public square, without high-quality journalism - journalism that can distinguish a fact from a belief and again from an opinion; that understands that the purpose of opinion isn't to depart from facts but to use them as a bridge to a larger idea called 'truth;' and that appreciates that truth is a large enough destination that, like Manhattan, it can be reached by many bridges of radically different designs. In other words, journalism that is grounded in facts while abounding in disagreements." - Bret Stephens, columnist for The New York Times, while speaking at a journalism awards dinner in Sydney, Australia

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Here's how different networks handled President Donald Trump's comments and tweets urging NFL owners to fire players who do not stand for the national anthem.

A new project at Georgetown University, launched with the support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is documenting and analyzing incidents around the United States in which free speech is being challenged. It's called The Free Speech Project.

The New York Times' sponsor a subscription program has provided free NYT access to more than 2 million students in more than 3,000 public schools across the U.S.

The John. S. and James L. Knight foundation announced an initiative to support the role of strong, trusted journalism as essential to a healthy democracy. Seven projects under the new Trust, Media and Democracy initiative will bring communities and journalists together to create long-term solutions to combat misinformation.

With advertising revenue declining, prominent editors stepping down and major publications being put on the market, former editors say magazines are about as useful as vinyl records and sailboats.

INDIANAPOLIS — Miriam Ascarelli and Hagit Limor were selected to receive the Howard S. Dubin Outstanding Pro Member Award from the Society of Professional Journalists for their outstanding contributions to their SPJ chapters and regions.

Each year, this award is given to no more than two members — one from a chapter of 75 or more members and one from less than 75 members. The award is in honor of longtime SPJ member of the Chicago Headline Club Howard Dubin, who not only contributes time and money to the Society but also remains dedicated to service at the chapter level.

Miriam Ascarelli
Ascarelli was nominated by John Ensslin, former national president, and Maureen Nevin Duffy along with members of the New Jersey Pro board. Ascarelli works to make the New Jersey chapter better as its president by resolving difficult situations, maintaining the chapter website, improving membership through encouragement and collaborating with other area groups – all while overseeing her own students and the student newspaper at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Hagit Limor
Limor was nominated by Tom McKee, Greater Cincinnati Pro chapter president. Limor served as SPJ national president and is currently serving as the Legal Defense Fund chair and treasurer for the Cincinnati Pro chapter. She has also served on the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation Board and played a prominent role in updating the SPJ Code of Ethics. Limor does all of this as a volunteer while maintaining her career as a journalism professor at the University of Cincinnati.

Ascarelli and Limor will be recognized at Excellence in Journalism 2017 in Anaheim, California, Sept. 7-9.

Google Begins Rolling Out Its Latest Algorithm Update – Google Panda 4.2

by Owner @ Google Maps Marketing – Expert Local SEO Company

Google’s Gary Illyes has confirmed that Google started rolling out Panda update version 4.2 last weekend, affecting 2–3% of queries.

Google algorithm updates always rouse a storm on the internet community as they directly affect website rankings. The latest such refresh is Google Panda 4.2, which began on 18th July, 2015. However, the rollout is extremely slow and that’s the reason people didn’t notice it. According to Google, it may take months till the time we are able to notice any significant impact on the website rankings. It might also not affect all the pages of a website in the short run. Google officials were tight-lipped about why the rollout is so slow.

This refresh is happening just after 10 months from the last update that was rolled out in September last year. As Google algorithm updates keep on happening periodically, it’s considered to be the 30th such update.

It was difficult even for the webmasters to notice … Continue reading

How to Leverage Social Media for SEO: Link Building

by Owner @ Google Maps Marketing – Expert Local SEO Company

Exploring the myriad of ways social networks can be utilized in your link-building efforts.

I recently asked a room of experienced marketers how they thought social media marketing could assist their SEO efforts. The answers were more or less what I had expected to hear:

Social media helps foster relationships, which in turn helps build links and improves rankings. Social media aids in public relations, as a distribution channel and a means of generating easy online buzz. Social sharing provides a form of social proof, giving greater credibility and trustworthiness to your content. Brands can rank for their social networking profiles and receive greater visibility within the SERP.

While these are all true, let’s focus on how link building on social platforms can help unite a brand’s social media marketing and SEO efforts.

At the most basic level, social networking sites provide an easy way to share and distribute your message. If the content is seen by the … Continue reading

2017 SPJ Pro Chapters of the Year named at Opening Business Session

by @ SPJ News

Anna Gutierrez, SPJ Communications Coordinator, (317) 920-4785, agutierrez@spj.org

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Society of Professional Journalists annually selects professional chapters to honor for their commitment to SPJ’s mission and the profession of journalism.

Large Chapter of the Year is open to chapters with 75 or more members and Small Chapter of the Year is open to chapters with fewer than 75 members.

Large Chapter of the Year

The Florida Pro chapter is honored as the Large Chapter of the Year for the second consecutive year for their dedication to education and continued commitment to the mission of the Society.

Florida hosted five major programs that, judges said, went beyond simple panel discussions. It offered national grants to other chapters and journalists who wanted to host events. The Drone Tour covered five states and received a matching SDX grant. The Femme Freelance Fest – hosted by and for women – ranged on topics from contracts to copyright, and happened before the end of the fiscal year. The chapter matched 80 freelancers with 16 employers. The Fake News Game Show was accepted as a featured program at the nation’s largest college media convention in Dallas this October.

Florida was also the only chapter to have multiple sessions accepted at EIJ and launched the Student Chapter Development network to support and help create campus chapters in Florida. To put it simply, this chapter did a lot, and did it well.

The finalist for Large Chapter of the year is Minnesota Pro.

Small Chapter of the Year

The Cincinnati Pro Chapter was named the Small Chapter of the Year for the second year in a row for its dedication to involvement, awards and diversity events.

This is the third time the Cincinnati chapter has won this designation in the past four years because it continues to offer robust and relevant programming for members.

Cincinnati Pro made an effort to get involved in the community. The chapter hosted three post-election events that attracted 160 people, including 12 high school students. It hosted a debate between three candidates running for Cincinnati mayor, with an audience of 125 people.

The chapter also worked to provide training and support for members. Cincinnati Pro hosted sessions with journalists to teach them how to use the new Cincinnati Police Department online records request portal. It also hosted 10 “Lunch with the Pros” sessions by sending working journalists to the University of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky University, in addition to supporting two UC internship programs and a Kentucky Press Association event for students. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Cincinnati Pro chapter.

The finalists for Small Chapter of the Year are Bluegrass Pro and Las Vegas Pro.

Historic Site in Journalism plaque dedication Aug. 13 on Roosevelt Island, New York

by @ SPJ News

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Aug. 8, 2017

Contacts:
Andrew Seaman, SPJ Ethics Committee Chair, 570-483-8555, andrew.m.seaman@andrewmseaman.com

INDIANAPOLIS – The Society of Professional Journalists and Roosevelt Island Historical Society will dedicate a plaque honoring the island in New York City as the 2016 Historic Site in Journalism.

Judith Berdy, historical society president; Rebecca Baker, SPJ president-elect; and Andrew Seaman, SPJ Ethics Committee chair, will discuss the historical significance of the site during the dedication at 1 p.m. EDT Sunday (Aug. 13) at the Roosevelt Island Historical Society’s Visitor Center kiosk.

"All of New York City obviously has a romantic history with journalism, but no other place has captured my attention more than Roosevelt Island.” Seaman said. “Each time I visit, I can't help but think of Nellie Bly's journey to the 'madhouse' and her contributions to the profession. I'm so happy that the Society of Professional Journalists decided to recognize Roosevelt Island with this honor."

The Octagon, which is located on the north end of the island, is an ornate stone building built in 1841 to house psychiatric patients in its two L-shaped wings. Patients brought to the island by boat were separated from the rest of society in what Charles Dickens referred to as a “lounging, listless, madhouse air.”

In 1887, Nellie Bly was sent to the island after acting strangely. Though she received the same treatment as the patients, Bly was there only on assignment from newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer. Her work “10 Days in a Madhouse” is considered among the first pieces of investigative journalism and led to improvements in treatment of psychiatric patients.

The building served as a general hospital until 1955. The octagonal entry was fully restored and now serves as the entry to a residential building.

Since 1942, SPJ has honored the people and places that have played important roles in the history of journalism through the Historic Sites program. Some honorees include: Freedom’s Journal, the first Black newspaper published in the United States, and The Wheeling Intelligencer, the oldest continuously published daily newspaper in West Virginia.

New website to track press freedom violations in United States

by @ SPJ News

Contacts:
Lynn Walsh, SPJ National President, 614-579-7937, lynn.k.walsh@gmail.com

INDIANAPOLIS — The Society of Professional Journalists joined more than 20 press freedom organizations announcing the launch today of the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, a new nonpartisan website dedicated to documenting press freedom abuses across the United States.

Led by the Committee to Protect Journalists and Freedom of the Press Foundation, the site will serve as a central repository for data at a time when journalists in the U.S. are facing increased hostility.

In recent months, journalists have been charged with crimes while covering protests in Washington D.C. and North Dakota; stopped at the border and subjected to searches of their electronic devices; and physically assaulted, in one case by a congressional candidate. Data collected on the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker shows that 19 journalists have been arrested during their work in 2017 and that at least 10 reporters are currently facing charges. In 2017 at least four journalists have been stopped at the border and 11 have faced physical attacks, per the tracker. These numbers may increase as we receive new information.

“The United States has some of the strongest legal protections for press freedom in the world and a robust and varied media landscape, but this cannot be taken for granted. Open hostility, threats of leak prosecutions, and arrests have created a precarious situation for journalists,” said Alex Ellerbeck, senior research associate for the U.S. at the Committee to Protect Journalists and chair of the steering committee for the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker. “A full and honest accounting of challenges to press freedom in this country is sorely needed.”

The U.S. Press Freedom Tracker collects data based on news reports and tips submitted by journalists, professional organizations and press freedom organizations. The coalition behind the tracker will use the research in letters, legal briefs and advocacy campaigns.

“With the Trump administration ramping up its war on journalism, this initiative could not come at a more important time,” said Trevor Timm, executive director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation. “We hope it will be vital to highlighting the threats to press freedom in the U.S. and the important work journalists do to hold the government accountable.”

Freedom of the Press Foundation is leading the day-to-day operations of the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, with its senior reporter, Peter Sterne, serving as the managing editor. The Committee to Protect Journalists is providing the initial funding and chairing the steering committee. The steering committee also includes representatives from the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, the Knight Institute at Columbia University, Reporters Without Borders and Index on Censorship. Please find a full list of partners on the website.

Buttry, Dreier earn SPJ Ethics in Journalism Awards for exceptional, ethical journalism

by @ SPJ News

Contacts:
Abbi Martzall, SPJ Awards Coordinator, (317) 920-4791, amartzall@spj.org
Anna Gutierrez, SPJ Communications Coordinator, (317) 920-4785, agutierrez@spj.org

INDIANAPOLIS — The Society of Professional Journalists is giving two Ethics in Journalism Awards to exceptional journalists. Steve Buttry, the former director of student media at the Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University, is awarded posthumously. The other is awarded to Hannah Dreier, Venezuela correspondent for the Associated Press.

The Ethics in Journalism Award honors journalists or news organizations that perform in an outstanding ethical manner demonstrating the ideals of the SPJ Code of Ethics.

Steve Buttry
Buttry pursued his journalism career in 44 states and at least 10 countries, taught and researched innovation for the American Press Institute and was recognized by Editor & Publisher as Editor of the Year in 2010. He worked in the industry for more than 40 years and lead discussions about the future of journalism on his blog, The Buttry Diary.

The Buttry Diary featured blog posts about digital-first journalism, journalism ethics, training and all things media related. Andy Schotz, SPJ Region 2 director, said Buttry’s blog posts were detailed, direct and thorough.

“Steve was exceptional in a number of ways, including his writing, his teaching and his baseball knowledge. One of his greatest traits, though, was his commitment to ethical journalism,” Schotz said.

Buttry went through waves of membership with SPJ, but continued to get involved throughout the years to make the Code of Ethics better. He provided critiques on his blog and discussed suggestions during the code revision process.

Buttry died Feb. 19. His life was dedicated to the news business. This award is being given for a lifetime of important contributions in the world of ethical journalism.

Hannah Dreier
With a media ban in hospitals and children dying without access to medicine, Hannah Dreier faced many ethical conflicts about whether to intervene, whether to name sources, whether to give identifying information on sources and whether to break difficult information to sources while reporting a series of stories, “Venezuela Undone,” about how the once oil-rich country of Venezuela is now falling apart.

There were many conversations and decisions about how to approach covering Venezuela’s crumbling medical system.

“We realized we would then have to balance the journalistic imperative to report without getting involved against the need to save a child. We decided it would be morally compromising to stand by impartially observing as a child died without trying to find the medicine the family needed. We couldn’t do it,” said Mary Rajkumar, The Associated Press International Enterprise Editor and “Venezuela Undone” series editor.

Throughout the entire project of stories, videos, opinion pieces and interactives, Dreier was meticulous in considering ethical issues she was facing in “Venezuela Undone.”

Dreier graduated from Wesleyan University in Connecticut, and spent the first years of her career at The San Jose Mercury News. She previously covered California state government and the business of gambling for AP.

A complete list of previous winners is available online.

How Google Search Works in 2006

by Owner @ Google Maps Marketing – Expert Local SEO Company

Infographic shows how search works, from the perspective of a content creator, starting with their content & following it through the indexing & ranking process.

As users have shifted to mobile devices, the limited screen size of the devices have pushed search engines to squeeze out & displace publishers with their own self-hosted information in an effort to offset the poor usability offered by tiny devices, while ensuring the search habit does not decline.

The philosophy of modern search has thus moved away from starting with information and connecting it to an audience, to starting with the user and customizing the result page to them.

“The biggest three challenges for us still will be mobile, mobile, mobile”.

How to help with Hurricane Irma

by @ SPJ Leads

"Journalists are public servants who aren't on the public payroll but are performing a public service every single day." - Rebecca Baker, SPJ President 2017-2018

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Snapchat is now including four student newspapers - The Daily Californian at the University of California at Berkeley, The Battalion at Texas A&M, The Daily Orange at Syracuse University and the Badger Herald at the University of Wisconsin at Madison - in its Discover feature. The weekly stories resemble other content published by The New York Times, CNN, Cosmopolitan and other media organizations in the Discover tab.

Time Editor-in-Chief Nancy Gibbs, who rose through the ranks over three decades from her start as a fact-checker to become the first female top editor of the century-old publication, is stepping down.

Student reporters in North Carolina were kicked out of an "open" student government meeting. After the meeting, Technician editors contacted the Student Press Law Center and the North Carolina Press Association for help. The editor-in-chief said, "If they continue doing this, what's to stop them from keeping us out of senate meetings or executive meetings or calling us and saying, 'Hey, don't run this in your newspaper,' or something like that? That's not a precedent that I want to set."

Journalists are having trouble reporting on health care under the Trump administration because of lack of information and insufficient responses if they do get answers. SPJ member Kathryn Foxhall said "I don't see the administrations ever stopping what they are doing, unless we as journalists pull out all stops and call it the censorship that it is."

Hurricane Irma

—While Florida businesses were evacuating before Irma, newsrooms were debating whether to stay or not to stay. Here's how Florida's newsrooms covered Irma.
—Check out Hurricane Irma, as told by the front pages of Florida news outlets. Now that the storm has passed, Florida begins work on recovery.
—These tools and sites were the most useful to reporters during Irma.
—As Irma barreled through Florida, a debate over TV storm reporting surfaced.
—The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma has a helpful  guide for reporters about what to do before, during and after a hurricane.

We're thankful for the journalists who sacrifice and risk their safety to provide coverage and information about the storm. Does your newsroom need assistance?  Let us know.

GIVE A LITTLE

Here are ways you can help people impacted by Hurricane Irma. Here are some specific organizations that are leading relief efforts in Miami-Dade County, the Florida Keys and Southwest Florida.

#CommCares

The Valenti School of Communication at the University of Houston has created an emergency scholarship fund for their communication students. Almost all of the 2,000 students have to work part-time to support their education, now much more difficult in dealing with Hurricane Harvey aftermath. 100 percent of all donations will be used for students in need.  You can donate here.

ETHICS ESSENTIALS

When covering natural disasters - like Hurricanes Harvey and Irma - SPJ is often asked whether journalism ethics are different in emergencies. The answer is no. SPJ Ethics Chairman Andrew Seaman says, "Journalists - especially during emergencies and breaking news - should keep its tenets in mind." Read more from Seaman about reporting on disasters.

SPJ President starts #FreePressFriday

by @ SPJ Leads

"But if I were still here I would tell you that I wish I had done more work as a news reporter. Written better stories. Made more and better contacts. Skipped some of the easier pieces and done more in-depth stories. Spent more time on foreign stories. Been a better editor." - Mark Mooney, who died Oct. 6, wrote in his last byline

WHAT'S HAPPENING

"No algorithm of reporting is more enduring and productive than the Fives W's: Who, What, Where, When and Why. None of those is harder to answer than the Why." Roy Peter Clark writes about journalists' struggle to answer the hardest question, especially when reporting on mass shootings.

Newsrooms around the world aren't as digital-first minded as they'd like to be, according to a new International Center for Journalists report. There's disconnect between training opportunities organizations offer versus what journalists say they want, and people with digital-focused titles make up only 18 percent of newsrooms.

Some journalism schools are adding social media, curation and analytics to editing classes. Experts say these assignments expand traditional editing skills and help students recognize the importance of understanding audiences and delivery platforms.

What is the pivot to video costing the journalism industry? Are too many publishers chasing shiny objects instead of creating cohesive video strategies? CJR takes a look at four reasons the pivot to video has failed.

ETHICS ESSENTIALS

SPJ Ethics Committee member Alex Veeneman writes about the role of video footage when covering mass shootings like the one in Las Vegas last week. "On one hand, the footage underscores the gravity of the situation and emphasizes the scale of what happened Sunday night. On the other hand, the repetition of such videos can be seen as sensationalism - a way to utilize drama and to encourage viewers to stay tuned to the broadcast." Veeneman says striking the right balance between the necessary and the excess is tricky.

GET A GIG

SPJ is searching for an Executive Director to lead the Society and the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation. You can find more information about the position here. Deadline to apply is 5 p.m. EDT Oct. 31.

Are Website Builders Actually Free?

by Owner @ Google Maps Marketing – Expert Local SEO Company

The majority of website builder brands offer a free account which allows users access to the basic features and building tools. A handful of website builders provide a limited trial period to allow users to get comfortable with the service before paying for the subscription – these are generally the more complex and sophisticated website builders.

The free accounts generally provide users with a subdomain, for example yourname.wix.com, yourname.websitebuilder.com or yourname.squarespace.com users can then publish their site under this URL. If you publish your site on a free account you will notice that it has many advertising banners for the website builder brand that you chose, this doesn’t make your site look particularly appealing to your customers and visitors. Our advice is if you have never used a website builder before or it’s your first time designing a website use the free account to get used to the editor and the features it offers and then when you want … Continue reading

Anna Gutierrez, SPJ Communications Coordinator, (317) 920-4785, agutierrez@spj.org

INDIANAPOLIS — The Society of Professional Journalists has chosen Robert Buckman, associate professor of communication and journalism sequence coordinator at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, as the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching in Journalism Award.

Each year, SPJ honors an outstanding journalism educator who has made an exceptional contribution to the profession and/or journalism education. Buckman won this year with detailed letters of support from faculty and students in the Department of Communication of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

“His uncompromising insistence on accurate fact gathering, spell-checking (the old-fashioned way), and plain good storytelling is renowned,” said William R. Davie, Board of Regents Support Fund Regents Chair of Communication at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. “He applies a sort of tough love that demands perfection from his students and colleagues.”

Buckman graduated from Texas Christian University in 1970. He then went on to receive his master’s degree in government from TCU in 1972 with honors. Buckman graduated with his Ph.D. in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin in 1986. He began teaching a variety of journalism subjects in 1986 while continuing to freelance with news organizations like The Dallas Morning News, The Boston Globe, The Washington Times, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, The Tampa Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, and many more.

Outside the classroom, Buckman is active in the Society of Professional Journalists among other professional organizations. He organized the new SPJ student chapter at the University of Lousiana at Lafayette in 1989 and has served as the faculty adviser since. Buckman also co-founded the SPJ Louisiana Pro Chapter in 2015 and is a member of the board of directors. Nationally, Buckman has served as a member of the SPJ Ethics Committee and played an active role in rewriting the SPJ Code of Ethics in 1996.

Buckman retired in May 1998 as a lieutenant colonel after 28 years in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was recalled to active duty in June 2008, and served a 12-month tour in Baghdad.

Buckman will be honored at the Excellence in Journalism 2017 conference in Anaheim, California, Sept. 7-9.

I love the movie “Almost Famous.” It has a compelling story about a kid who wants to write about rock music; it has good acting (Kate Hudson, Billy Crudup, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Francis McDormand, Zooey Deschanel, Jimmy Fallon, and a one-second appearance by Mitch Hedberg); early scenes are shot in my home town of San Diego; it’s based on an experience of a local celebrity (Cameron Crowe); it has good music and more.

But one of the main reasons is it’s also an instructional movie about inte...

Why your current SEO approach isn’t enough.

by Owner @ Google Maps Marketing – Expert Local SEO Company

Customers are more empowered than ever before.

Technology and connectivity have completely changed our lives, especially in terms of how and where we spend our money.

This has also led to a power-shift, where people have almost total control of what they see and experience online. This is in turn “causing havoc” for businesses and forcing them to evolve quickly.

It also doesn’t help that the online experience is full of noise; many sites are just a wall of ads, messages and assorted brand clutter. Users now have multimedia and multi-device habits and therefore have multiple means of escape.

All of this has led to search evolving into ‘discovery marketing’. In fact marketers are now shifting money away from paid search into content marketing and other means of being discovered organically.

Rochelle Riley of the Detroit Free Press receives $75,000 Pulliam Fellowship in Editorial Writing

INDIANAPOLIS --- Rochelle Riley, a columnist for the Detroit Free Press, has been chosen for the 2017 Pulliam Editorial Fellowship. Riley plans to spend the next year studying the effect of trauma and a toxic environment on children’s learning.

The judges were impressed by Riley's long-standing commitment to putting a spotlight on problems afflicting the community she serves, and the powerful voice she has brought to the daunting task.

Robert Huschka, former Detroit Free Press executive editor, said Riley is a strong advocate for the state’s children, a crusader for equality and a community leader.

She spent the last year, with the Detroit Free Press, on a Solutions Journalism project that found nearly 14 children per day are victims of crime in Detroit; the average age of the victim is 13; and the most common crime is assault. Riley and her newspaper worked for more than a year trying to understand the children’s experiences.

“She is fearlessness and persistence as she fights to ensure Detroit’s renaissance sticks and its children benefit. She dares anyone to get in the way of ‘the new Detroit’ and the future this city deserves,” Huschka said.

Riley said the Free Press has been writing about the problems and programs to help the symptoms of “toxic stress,” but said in her cover letter she wants to dig deeper and look at how that trauma and a toxic environment affect how children learn and what we should do about it.

“I haven’t been able to stop thinking about what that might feel like and what that means for children in urban schools, whose underachievement is reported every year without enough context or care,” Riley said. “I want to change that.”

“Riley’s passion for exploring the connections between experiencing trauma, living in a toxic environment and a child’s ability to learn stood out among all the entrants," said Jay Evensen, member of the judging panel and senior editorial columnist at Deseret News. "This is a vital concern that tears at the fabric of communities and families, and she has what it takes to move the needle. While her work will center on Detroit and Wayne County, I have no doubt she will uncover valuable information that will be applicable nationwide.”

She plans to work with Western Michigan’s Children’s Trauma Center and a dedicated resource agency to study a classroom at a single school in one of Detroit’s most crime-ridden neighborhoods. She also plans to document what happens when traumatized children try and fail to learn, and then document what happens when they get the help they need to overcome ‘the trauma obstacle.’

“Children are not problems to be solved; the challenges in their environment are,” Riley wrote in her letter. “If we don’t take it seriously, then we risk losing our next generation of leaders, taxpayers, teachers and responsible parents. But solving their circumstances requires not only innovation, but a willingness to expand our horizons to create or find solutions.”

Todd Gillman, chairman of the judging panel and Washington bureau chief of The Dallas Morning News, said Riley's body of work is impressive.

“Her skills and passion are superior. Her instinct for finding the right stories to tell in order to grab the attention of the public and policymakers is apparent,” Gillman said. “She cares about children, and we're glad to provide the time and resources to allow a deep dive, and to spur results.”

Tim Swarens and Sonya Ross were also members of the judging panel. Swarens received the award last year.

The award will be presented to Riley by Robert Leger, SDX Foundation National President, on Oct. 23 in the Detroit Free Press newsroom.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Ohio University has been selected by the Society of Professional Journalists to receive the Outstanding Campus Chapter award for the second year in a row. The Outstanding Campus Chapter award honors chapters for their commitment to SPJ’s mission and the profession of journalism.

The Ohio University SPJ chapter is being honored for its dedication to providing educational opportunities for members. In the last year, it staged 30 successful events with its 53 members.

Under the leadership of adviser Nerissa Young and President Hayley Harding, some of the events the chapter hosted were a birthday party for James Madison, a First Amendment Free Food Festival, a campus-wide Grammar Smackdown contest and Q&A sessions with SPJ National President Lynn Walsh and other influential journalists.

Young also worked with the chapter to provide a session focused on social media and suicide coverage which attracted about 50 students.

In addition, with attendance of more than 100 people, the chapter had Freedom Sings, a nationally known group, perform “banned” songs to highlight the power of the First Amendment and free speech.

The chapter was honored tonight at the Student Union during the Excellence in Journalism 2017 conference in Anaheim, California.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Society of Professional Journalists and 32 other journalism and open government organizations sent a letter today to Sen. John Thune (R-SD) and Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) urging the Senate Commerce Committee to hold a hearing on the state of media in the United States.

The letter follows one sent in May by Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM), members of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, requesting this hearing. The Committee last hosted a hearing on the Future of Journalism in May 2009. It plays an important role in shaping the environment in which journalism and media exist and in which journalists seek to work safely.

“We believe now is the time to reaffirm the importance of a free and unfettered press, which has been a cornerstone of democracy for the past 240 years,” the letter states. “Having an open discussion where journalists can talk about their professions, the industry and explain how it all works will hopefully help rebuild trust in a pillar of our democracy, reaffirming to the American people the link between the strength of our nation’s democracy and its free press.”

Union Hotel in Flemington, N.J., named Historic Site in Journalism

INDIANAPOLIS — The Society of Professional Journalists has named the Union Hotel in Flemington, New Jersey, as a Historic Site in Journalism.

The Trial of the 20th Century – the trial of Bruno Richard Hauptmann for the kidnapping and murder of Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr. – took place in Flemington, New Jersey, in 1935. Some of the journalists covering this trial stayed at the Union Hotel, which stood across the street from the courthouse. The trial brought national media to the town for five weeks’ worth of coverage when “the media” were newspapermen and newspaperwomen.

“Being newspaper folk, they spent their free time in the bar at the back of the old hotel,” said Jane Primerano, SPJ Region 1 director. “Photos of the trial lined the walls of the old hotel while it was open and the echoes of their conversation still permeate the woodwork.”

“The hotel is a symbol of the dedication of newspaper and radio reporters in the days when even New Jersey was the Wild West in many ways. It is truly a part of journalism history,” Primerano said.

A bronze plaque will be placed at the Union Hotel to distinguish it as a National Historic Site in Journalism. See a complete list of past winners here.

The Better Government Association receives Pulliam First Amendment Award

INDIANAPOLIS — The Better Government Association has been selected to receive the Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award for its work that led Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to acknowledge he circumvented open records laws by using personal email accounts to conduct public business.

Presented by the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation, the Society of Professional Journalists’ educational foundation, the award recognizes those who have fought to protect and preserve one or more of the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment. It is awarded in memory of Eugene S. Pulliam, publisher of The Indianapolis Star and The Indianapolis News from 1975 until his death in 1999. He was a staunch supporter of the First Amendment.

The BGA took the mayor and the city to court after not receiving much of substance when requesting the mayor’s email records through the Freedom of Information Act. After losing nearly every legal battle for a year, the city attorneys came forward and acknowledged the mayor was using his personal email to conduct public business. In turn, the city released the emails and implemented a new policy preventing similar behavior going forward.

“We broke news and wrote dramatic stories about city government. But beyond that, our work was a win for open government,” Bob Secter, BGA Director of Investigations said. “Other media outlets across the country finally had access to essential communications involving the mayor. They wrote their own stories, conducted their own analyses and came to their own conclusions about how Emanuel was working the levers of government.”

Secter said the BGA performed a critical service for the public and inched Chicago one step closer to the transparency Emanuel promised but failed to deliver.

“Non-profit groups like ours have an even greater duty to stand firm for solid and traditional values of journalism,” Secter said. “That commitment can take many forms, from conventional news stories, to innovate online presentations, to taking government agencies to court.”

BGA will be awarded $10,000, a crystal award and travel accommodations to the Excellence in Journalism 2017 conference in Anaheim, California. There, the staff will be honored at the SPJ President’s Installation Banquet. The conference is hosted by SPJ, Radio Television Digital News Association, National Association of Hispanic Journalists and Native American Journalists Association.

Bruce W. Sanford receives Wells Memorial Key, SPJ's highest honor

by @ SPJ News

Anna Gutierrez, SPJ Communications Coordinator, 317-920-4785, agutierrez@spj.org

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Bruce W. Sanford has been awarded the Wells Memorial Key. Sanford received this award, the highest honor for a member of SPJ, at the President’s Installation Banquet tonight during the Excellence in Journalism Conference in Anaheim, California.

Awarding Sanford with the highest honor is an honor that is far overdue, said David Carlson, SPJ President 2005-06 and 2013 Wells Key recipient.

“We needed him a lot more than he needed us, that’s for sure,” Carlson said.

Sanford has been SPJ’s attorney since November of 1980. Before attending law school, Sanford was a reporter at the Wall Street Journal. Now, he’s one of America’s leading media lawyers at BakerHostetler (B&H), a name every SPJ leader knows well.

Sanford stayed with SPJ for 37 years and worked to keep the Society’s interests at heart, despite our ability to pay the firm’s hourly rate. He has represented SPJ through First Amendment, FOI, employment contracts, tax law, real estate and much more.

“He has brought us much prestige, and seats at many important tables,” Carlson said. “He has provided invaluable legal advice at key moments in the Society’s history, including a libel suit over our ethics book and both of the largest bequests ever made by the Legal Defense Fund, Vanessa Leggett and Josh Wolfe.”

Sanford only received two raises in his time at SPJ – each at least 17 years apart – while B&H was providing over $100,000 per year of pro bono work for the Society.

“There were times when things got tight that we were forced to scrimp on his fees. I don’t believe he ever scaled back in his advocacy on our behalf,” said Kelly Hawes, SPJ President 1995-96.

Jim Plante, SPJ President 1987-88, said he valued his counsel as president and throughout his years on the board.

“I know he spent many hours working for us when he could have been billing much more lucrative hours for clients with much deeper pockets,” Plante said.

Sanford attended every convention and many committee meetings for many years. He always remained involved with SPJ, even as our work was passed along to more junior lawyers at B&H.

Named after Sigma Delta Chi’s second national president, Chester C. Wells, the Wells Memorial Key was first awarded 99 years ago. Each year, it is given to a member who has performed outstanding service to the Society in the preceding year or through a period of years.
