June Playlist – Backpack Tunes

by Martyna @ Journey Six Feet

Music is my passion. So I decided to create monthly playlists starting with June. June was a crazy month I wanted to do and to see so much but with a new job and classes, not much free time was left. This playlist consists mostly of slower songs, for reminding that even your daily routine is just sprinting and accomplishing things there is always a time to go to the beach to see a sunset. *** Muzika – mano aistra.

Holidays, classes and life goals

by Martyna @ Journey Six Feet

I admit feeling a little guilty for not posting for so long. July and  August were crazy! I was finishing my certification program at San Diego Continuing Education in Interactive Media and I spent most of my time trying to crack HTML and CSS, then we went on holiday for a week to Michigan. And I totally left a piece of my heart by one of the million lakes out there. We stayed in this beautiful house built in 1885 in Empire town. We spent holidays with Mr.J parents, his sister with husband and three little ones. It was quite fun to see what does it feel to be around with three little boys. Before we left for our vacation I was worried about my pet rat as she wasn’t doing that great lately and couple days before our trip  we needed to put it to sleep. So that happened. When we came back from vacation I felt that I had too much time and I was wasting it by watching a lot of Youtube videos and I needed to do something about it so I started a new class at the same school. Just this time I took a […]

Accredited Online Medical Assistant Programs Guide

by Edsmart @ EDsmart

Overview | Rankings

Medical assistant programs prepare aspiring medical assistants to pass state exams and meet other state requirements. These programs can be completed in two years or less at a technical or vocational school as well as junior and community colleges.

Though licensure requirements vary by state, those pursuing a degree in medical assisting can take advantage of the flexibility of an online degree.

In the past, it wasn’t uncommon for medical assistants to be hired with no experience and receive on-the-job training. As the healthcare system increases in complexities, employers seek candidates with the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful in their positions. Medical assistant programs and state exams have been created to help prepare aspiring medical assistants for work in the healthcare system.

State exams are required to jumpstart your career as a medical assistant.

The American Association of Medical Assistants offers the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) exam. Passing this exam guarantees to an employer that candidates have a current and thorough understanding of the healthcare and medical industry. The AAMA certification is quickly becoming the entry-level standard in the medical assisting field–not yet a mandate.

3 Types of Medical Assisting Degrees

Online Medical Assisting Certificate

Focused program made up of core clinical courses, without many of the general education and liberal arts classes included in an associate degree program
May not be eligible for transfer credit if you decide to further your education in the future
Often the least expensive programs, due to lower number of credit hours
Can be completed in as little as 9 months

Online Medical Assisting Diploma Programs

Entry requirements may include H.S. diploma or equivalent
Typically last 12-18 months (as little as 8-9 months)
Nearly identical to certificate programs
Self-paced study mixed with real-time elements
Credits may not transfer
Courses focus on clinical and administrative skills

Associate of Applied Science Degree in Medical Assisting (AAS)

Can be earned in two years or four semesters
~65 credits (50 core course credits, 15 general studies elective credits)
Average of 30 more credit hours than certificate programs
Includes more general, liberal arts, clinical, and administrative classes
Credits easily transfer toward a bachelor of science degree, if further education is sought
Eligible to take the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) examination and/or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) examination once degree is earned
Offers top-level earnings and more lucrative positions
Offers immediate employability once degree is earned

3 Specialties and Areas of Concentration

Medical assistants tend to seek specific training in order to better serve their employers. This training involves one of three categories:

Clinical Medical Assisting (CMA): This focus mainly deals with patient care, side-by-side with a physician.Clinical medical assistants assist with minor procedures and examinations, chart vital signs, explain treatments and procedures to patients, and document vital signs, among other things. In small offices, CMAs often help with maintaining and ordering supplies, answering phones, scheduling appointments, working on insurance claims, and more. A two-year degree or certificate course are required to jumpstart your career as a formally trained CMA. Most online courses include real-world “practice” and study that prepare them for this field.

Administrative Medical Assisting: Administrative medical assistants, or medical secretaries, perform administrative [...]

Slot Canyon Hike in Anza Borrego Desert

by Martyna @ Journey Six Feet

Anza Borrego desert is one of my favorite places to visit. There are miles of trails, hidden places and gems with unique landscapes, plants, rocks and much more, just have time to explore all of it. When I found out that there is a slot canyon I had to see myself. The slot canyon trail  is an easy family friendly hike (0.8-mile length), but if you are sensitive to high temperatures like I am, I would suggest visiting this place in winter or spring when temperatures are not as high. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen protection and a good camera to take lots of pictures of the beautiful canyon. The slot canyon is marked on the map but it is still quite challenging to get there, so before you go, make sure to plan your trip ahead. From Highway 78 East, turn left on Buttes Pass dirt road and follow till the end, you will see a little “parking lot” where you should leave your car and start the hike. The entrance of the trail is easy to miss but generally you should go down and start hiking to the left if that make sense. Ok, enough boring introductions time to get real […]

Regional vs. National Accreditation – There’s a Huge Difference

by Edsmart @ EDsmart

The vast number of options available for students heading off to college or even thinking about heading to college can be rather daunting. While your educational experience will be what you make of it, wherever you go, there is one key thing you need to consider: is the institution accredited?

In the United States, accreditation means that the institution that you are planning on attending for your higher education is regularly assessed by an independent agency on the quality of the education it provides. There are two types of accreditation: the first is institutional, which refers to the entire institution. The second is program-based and relates to individual programs of study within the institution.

Institutional accreditation is a process that a college or university voluntarily goes through. The institution requests that an accreditation agency assess its programs, its faculty, and its students’ success, in order to determine if these meet the standards for higher education. If the standards are met, the institution is accredited and regularly reassessed in order to make certain that the entire institution continues to meet that standard.

Within an accredited institution individual programs may be accredited separately from the overall institution. Depending on what career field you want to enter, this may be more important than the institutional accreditation. Psychology, education, medical specialties, engineering, and social work, are fields that often times require that a student’s program was accredited separately from the institution. Program-based accreditation is conducted by the professional associations linked to that field of study, such as the American Psychological Association for Psychology. This type of accreditation makes certain that the program of study meets the standards of the field for the education and experiences that will result in the student having the background that will lead to success in their field.

If you are not sure if the institution or the program you are interested in is accredited and you have thoroughly checked its website and print materials, the United States Department of Education keeps a database of accredited institutions and programs accessible through its website: http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/.

Regional Vs National Accreditation

Plain and simple, regional accreditation is not the same as national accreditation. The main difference between the two are that credits earned from institutions that are regionally accredited are more widely accepted and thus more easily transferable.

Earning credits in college is like getting points in a game. Students who earn enough points in a game level up. Leveling up in this game of college credits is earning different degrees. Whereas points in a game don’t usually transfer to another game, they do transfer to other colleges. Online college students should be aware of the impact that accreditation has on their degree journey. While national accreditation might seem more authoritative that regional accreditation, this isn’t always the case. Regional accreditation is older and more prestigious

While national accreditation might seem more authoritative that regional accreditation, this isn’t always the case. Regional accreditation is older and more prestigious that national, except in a few cases. Most non-profit colleges have regional accreditation, [...]

Kwaaymii Point – An Easy Hike For Everyone

by Martyna @ Journey Six Feet

I constantly look for new hikes in San Diego. Sometimes it can be frustrating due to the location: in the North – Los Angeles, in the South – Mexico, East – dessert, West – water. Usually, all the cool trails are couple hours away from where we live, but all so worth to visit. Here and there I “get” itchy feet to go somewhere, sometimes I  just want an easy and flat hike, other times full body torturing experience. Recently I was browsing online looking for new trails in San Diego and came across to Kwaaymii Point in Cleveland National Forest. It caught my attention that the spot is popular among hang gliders and my first thought was, that it should be easily accessible with great views of the desert and mountains and I was right! Kwaaymii Point trail is on the Pacific Crest Trail and it makes everyone who is into hiking a little more excited  (in this case it was Mr. J). Kwaaymii Point Trail is only 0.5-mile length and flat so it is great for children and elder people. We parked the car at the Pioneer Mail Picknic Area and started walking towards the sign of PCT.  Since it was an easy and short stroll […]

Backpacking thru Trans-Catalina Trail in Catalina Island: cactuses, buffalos, rain and more!

by Martyna @ Journey Six Feet

Thanksgiving is coming that means it is time to plan another backpacking/adventure trip. Every year me and Mr.J instead of stuffing our bellies with food we go and explore new places. I started looking around what we will do this year ( it is always kind of last minute planning) but I remembered that I never shared what we did last year. So last Thanksgiving I celebrated by thru backpacking Trans- Catalina Trail. Trans-Catalina trail is located in the Catalina island around 22 miles ( 35 km) south of Los Angeles. The only way to reach the island is by a helicopter or plane ( if you are rich), by a ferry or with your own boat! The island is 22 miles (35 km) length and 8 (13 km) miles across at the greatest width. I took some backpacking diary/notes during this backpacking adventure and I will share them here. It was one of the most adventurous backpacking trips we went on. I enjoyed that we did not need to pack too much food, there are restaurants on the way. The campsites were tidy and some of them had toilets and running water. Catalina Island is full of wonderful plants […]

Accredited Respiratory Therapy Schools & Programs

by Edsmart @ EDsmart

Respiratory therapists us evaluation and therapeutic techniques to help patients assess, manage, and treat breathing issues. Work involves helping individuals who have a variety of chronic lung diseases or who have suffered a traumatic injury to their lungs. Patients may be dealing with bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, asthma, emphysema, newborn undeveloped lungs in newborn children, or other issues.

Most respiratory therapists work in hospitals but recent years have seen an increase of therapists working in home care agencies, nursing homes, respiratory clinics and emergency centers. Today, over 120,000 individuals in the U.S. work as respiratory therapists and the industry foresees a growth of 14,900 new jobs by 2024. Seventy-five percent of which will work in general medical and surgical hospitals.

Respiratory therapists earn an annual median salary of $57,790 per year or $27.78 per hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Education

According to the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC), respiratory therapists need an associate’s degree at minimum, but most employers prefer a bachelor’s degree or higher. The American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) is the central accrediting body for respiratory therapy schools and programs.

There are three levels of respiratory therapy programs, according to CoARC: 200, 300, and 400

200-level

These programs prepare graduates with competence in cognitive, psychomotor, and affective/behavior learning in regards to respiratory care practice. Graduates from 200-level programs can sit for the National Board for Respiratory Care Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials. The CRT credential is a prerequisite for admission to the Registry Examination.

300-level

These programs are conducted at satellite campuses geographically independent from the main location (base program) where all respiratory core class and laboratory coursework are offered. Programs can be a hybrid of online distance or online education programs.

400-level

These programs prepare graduates with competence in cognitive, psychomotor, and affective/behavior learning in regards to sleep disorder polysomnography practice. Graduates in 400-level programs develop core competencies of sleep disorder specialists and have the opportunity to earn both the National Board for Registry Care’s Sleep Disorders Specialty (SDS), the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist’s (BRPT), and the Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) credential examinations.

According to the most recent report from CoArc, there is a total of 447 accredited respiratory programs, 25 of which hold provisional accreditation.

Where to Attend
Vocational, Technical, Medical Institutes

These types of schools offer diplomas, certificates, and associate’s degrees focused on specific careers. Graduation from a vocational school allows students to seek entry-level positions. Respiratory therapy programs at these schools consist of class and lab work, and clinical practicums. Successful completion of the respiratory therapy program qualifies graduates to earn both the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentialing examinations from the National Board for Respiratory Care.

Community Colleges

Community colleges, also known as junior colleges, offer a low-cost option for aspiring respiratory therapists. Traditionally, these colleges offer a wider variety of degree options and do not focus on a specific career. Community colleges typically offer two degree tracks for the respiratory field – Associate in Applied Sciences in Respiratory Therapy (AS) and the Associate of Science in Respiratory Therapy (AS). The [...]

100 Best High Acceptance Rate Colleges and Universities

by Edsmart @ EDsmart

Good colleges with high acceptance rates are an excellent option for students who may not have had the best overall grades in high school or low standardized test scores. For those who have great grades, colleges with high acceptance rates can be perfect candidates for safety schools.

Colleges and universities with high acceptance rates focus less on attaining the best and brightest students and more on providing higher education access to the masses. Although all of these types of colleges accept everyone, most have a policy of admitting only a certain percentage of applicants.

Just because a school accepts more students doesn’t mean that the school nor education itself is of lesser academic value.

It is wise for every aspiring student to apply to high acceptance universities perchance no other school accepts them.

The following list includes the top 100 colleges in the United States with the highest acceptance rates for incoming freshman, 18 of which offer 100% acceptance rates. Utah and New Mexico are the only states that have two 100% acceptance rate colleges on our list.

Best Community Colleges in New York

by Edsmart @ EDsmart

The state of New York is home to 121 two-year colleges. Two of the major community college systems in New York are the City University of New York (CUNY) and State University of New York (SUNY), which, combined, operate more than 90 percent of all public community colleges in New York.

Some students at New York community colleges attend in order to complete an associate’s degree or some type of vocational training while others work on completing general education courses in order to transfer to a four-year institution of higher education.

For many students, the choice to attend a community college with the end goal of transferring to a four-year university is a more affordable option than going straight to a four-year institution.

Naturally, some of the community colleges in New York and New York City offer higher graduation and transfer rates than others, while some provide low tuition and more financial support.

Ranking Methodology

The team here at EDsmart ran the numbers on over 120 community colleges in the state of New York and ranked them based on:

Retention Rate
Transfer Rate
Graduation Rate
Net Price

*Data gathered from the National Center for Education Statistics’ College Navigator.

All four factors allow students to see the affordability and academic quality of each respective community college on our list. Every school was given a ranking in each category listed above then assigned a composite score with the highest score being 100. The only school to receive a perfect 100 was Guttman Community College.

Are Online Degrees as Respected as Traditional Degrees?

by Edsmart @ EDsmart

When Holly was thinking about going back to school, she wondered if she should go to an online college or traditional on-campus college. She’d heard that online degrees weren’t as respected as traditional, but she’d also heard that some companies respect online degrees.

Do Employers Respect Online Degrees?

Online education was once an oddity and the value of an online degree was uncertain at best. In recent years, traditional, residential colleges and universities have begun offering college courses through online learning. More than one-third of brick-and-mortar colleges and universities offer degrees entirely online.

According to a recent study conducted by Online Learning Consortium,

More than one in four students (28%) now take at least one online course.
Public institutions command the largest portion of online students, with 72.7% of all undergraduate and 38.7% of all graduate-level distance students.
The total of 5.8 million fall 2014 distance education students is composed of 2.85 million  taking all of their courses at a distance and 2.97 million taking some, but not all, distance  courses

Unlike a decade ago, the majority of employers are now embracing online education. As more and more trusted schools offer online degree programs, respect continues to grow. Online education is no longer an oddity but the norm as online course enrollment climbs for the 10th straight year.

According to a survey conducted by CareerBuilder.com, 83 percent of executives say that “an online degree is as credible as one earned through a traditional campus-based program.”

When asked, employers said that accreditation of the school, quality of its graduates, and the reputation of the college or university were among other things that make an online degree more credible.

Although employers see online degrees as reputable, the rest of America is slow to adopt the new education platform. According to a recent Gallup poll,

“Public perceptions about online education’s ability to deliver education in a format most students can succeed in, as well as its ability to tailor instruction to the individual, are more mixed, but tilt negatively”

The majority of Americans call online degree programs “only fair” or “poor” while 34 percent rate such programs as “excellent” or “best.” Adversely, 68 percent of Americans rated 4-year schools as “excellent” or “good” and 64 percent rated community colleges as highly as 4-year schools.

An online learning study conducted by the United States Department of Education addressed the topic of online vs traditional face-to-face- learning at the higher education level. The study, undertaken from 1996-2008, concluded the following:

Online higher education is more effective than traditional face-to-face learning.
Hybrid/Blended learning (online learning combined with traditional learning) is the most effective.
Face-to-face learning alone is the least effective method of among the three types of learning methods studied.

Lastly, according to a survey by OnlineLearningSurvey.com, faculty acceptance of online vs. face-to-face learning has increased from 57 percent in 2003 to 78 percent in 2011. Three-quarters of faculty see online learning as being just as good or better than traditional, face-to-face learning.

Tips for Finding a Respected Online Degree

If you’re looking to go back to school online, consider these six things to evaluate a quality online degree program.

Reputation

Does the school you’re considering have a brick-and-mortar location or is it online only? Schools that have physical campuses are viewed as more credible. If the school only has a P.O. box or [...]

How would your church respond to disaster?

by Robert Lundy @ American Anglican Council

It’s been heartening to see the Body of Christ in action after Hurricane Harvey. Several churches, including the Anglican Church in North America’s (ACNA) Church of the Apostles in Houston, became makeshift shelters.   There are denominational efforts like the ACNA’s Anglican Relief and Development, the North American Mission Board (Southern Baptist), Missouri Synod Lutherans and many others. Make your own down booties on a budget for cold feet.

by Martyna @ Journey Six Feet

There is nothing worse than after a long backpacking day get into a sleeping bag and wake up in the middle of the night with cold feet. That happens to me constantly when we go backpacking not in summer season. I have tried everything: wearing multiple dry socks, wearing grandma’s knitted woolen socks alone and with other socks, but I would still wake up with cold toes. And if feet are cold the whole body will get cold too and is impossible to go back to sleep. So I started thinking about other ways how to get rid of cold feet  in my sleeping bag? A new warmer sleeping bag cost too much and I am fine with the one I have. To buy down booties cost $50-100 and I didn’t want to spend that much money either. Since I know how to sew I decided to use my skills to make my own down booties/slippers. It was a long process as I was looking not only that booties would keep me warm but also that it would look good. I found couple patterns people used before in different backpacking forums but something was not working for me when I […]

International Banana Museum by Salton Sea. Keep Calm and Eat a Banana!

by Martyna @ Journey Six Feet

Before you read further the post, do me a favor grab a banana and eat it! Thank you! Last spring for my birthday I just wanted a little party and a road trip to an apocalyptic place – Salton Sea. Around the Salton Sea there are many weird things to see and do and one of those places is the International Banana Museum. Who knows me a little or worked with me, are aware of my banana a day habit. Bananas are good for you, they are tasty, yellow and just so filling. I am so glad there is a banana museum nearby San Diego. Oh… and my gaming name, if it’s not taken is always a Banana Queen. So I felt as a true Banana Queen I must to visit the Banana Museum, the most bananaanananananaana place of all! About International Banana Museum at the Salton Sea. It has over 20,000 banana related items. There is a small fee ( 1-2$) to enter unless you buy something. They are open from Friday to Monday 11AM to 7.30PM ( but I would call/email before going as it is run by a man who uses its own free time for that). I would highly suggest […]
