The trail “t”ed almost immediately. I think we actually went left this time though.

Description –

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts on the South Jersey Trails Facebook group about the Whitman Walk near the old Crystal Spring in Laurel Springs, NJ.  This spot was one of poet Walt Whitman’s favorite places, and he often would drink at the spring and bath in Timber Creek.

Just off the corner of Lakeview Ave and W Elma Ave, you can walk down the road-sized path down past the stone stack labeled “Crystal Spring”.

The trail drops down eight or ten feet in elevation into a flat area.  Straight ahead is the trailhead sign.  The spring is pretty much immediately to the right, but we saved that for later.

Now I wasn’t expecting a lot, but what we found was an intimate set of boardwalks along Big Timber Creek.  Inscribed on some boards were lines of verse that Whitman had written while in the area or thinking of the area.

Now I’m not usually much one for poetry, but poetry inscribed in the trail itself?  Let’s do this!

We quickly hit a four way intersection.  To the right was a bench next to the creek.

To the straight or left was a loop along a further area of the creek, which also had a bench to sit and reflect at at its furthest point.

Reflecting on some lines of Whitman, if that’s your thing.

Kite Flyer is enjoying nature.

To the left is another bench along the creek. To the right completes the loop at the four way intersection.

We reached the furthest bit of boardwalk along the creek, where there was another bench of sitting.

We then headed back along the loop to the original four way intersection.

We then headed back the way we had started, to the original “T” intersection.  I figured this short trail was done, but we were delighted to discover that the boardwalk stretched a bit on the other direction.  The trail followed the creek, went across a little mini-bridge, past a nice fishing spot comp, and reached a spot where the boardwalk ended.

Eventually, we’ll come back here and go down that side trail. It loops around to the spring by the original spot we reached the trail system.

Checking out a mushroom.

Checking [...]

2011 Spring Greetings

by noreply@blogger.com (colbran) @ Burson's Delta Resort

I hesitate to say Spring, as it snowed right before Easter!  Hopefully, by the time this reaches you, we will have warm temps and can hope that Spring is really here to stay.   The animals have returned….the trumpeter swans even came gliding in on the ice about a month ago.   Ted feeds the muskrats all winter, so the hole he chopped served  them as well.   About two weeks ago the deer from last year showed up, so Ted is busy with his feeding again.  We have as high as seven does and fawns here at one time.   We see the robins, tree swallows, finches, and sometimes woodpeckers.   We got a great picture of a pileated woodpecker on a birch tree right outside our garage.  Now, if we get nice weather, the gravel roads will dry out and we won’t feel like we are navigating through a mine field every time we drive to town.

We had a fairly mild winter for the UP.   We were way behind in snowfall and cold temps.   Our unofficial record of snow (we measure in the driveway) was less than 100”.   I think Ted blew out the driveway maybe 4 times.

Christmas brought both the girls and families here.    Dana, Jim, Brandon, and Colby came from Iowa, and Jill, Scott, Wyatt, Hannah, Dalaney, and Scotty from Crystal Falls.    We all stayed here in the log house and were quite comfy.   We had snow so they kids could tube and play outside.   The guys also got the vintage snowmobile we acquired from a man at our church running, so that was a big hit.   We took it to Thunder Bowl so the kids could be driven back up the hill after sledding down.     Brandon celebrated his 16th birthday and Dana and Jim their 20th wedding anniversary.   It was great having everyone here.

Our two big trips before winter were to Iowa for my 50th high school reunion in September.   That was a fun weekend seeing classmates and catching up on all their news.   Then in October, we picked up Ted’s sister in IN and drove south to Indianapolis to see her son, then on to Chauvin, LA to see her daughter, granddaughter, and new great granddaughter.   We stayed a week and saw the sights…..a plantation,  the coast where BP had a clean up operation from the oil spill, and a day in New Orleans, right down in the center of the Mardi Gras area.   The weather was super warm and we really enjoyed the area, good food, and seeing the sights.

Ted is working in Maple cabin right now.   He is going to do some rewiring and put in some new walls and floors.  I’m the “clean up crew”.   As soon as it gets warmer, I will start to get the cabins ready for our 48th season of business.   Wow, that doesn’t seem possible!  We have met many wonderful people over those seasons.   Some are no longer with us, but we sure have some great memories.   We have some third generations who still visit.   We will be ready for the Wednesday night potluck and the fellowship  we share around the campfire.   Peace and quietness is awaiting you.   We hope you have made your reservations, but if it’s not in your plans this summer, we wish you good health and happiness.

How to Secure a WordPress Website with WordFence Plugin

Website security, just like backups of years of family photos, is something that we often worry about only when it is too late.

In today’s post I would like to show you how to easily add a layer of protection to any WordPress website.

Happy New Year from the Burson's....We didn't have much snow for Christmas, but we are making up for it now. The snowflakes are swirling around outside this morning and it looks like we have about 6" so far. It is piled up on our deck posts here at Hemlock Hill, our log home. We have the woodstove casting a warm glow and we are snug as a bug. Time to enjoy the beauty of this wonderful area....may get our '77 Skidoo snowmobile out for a spin later. The trees are frosted and looking across the marsh it's a hazy view. Ted has been out to do his "chores", feed the birds and chop a hole in the ice for the muskrats and feeds them corn. We have only two turkeys coming, hoping for the 17 we had last year. We'll walk/jog soon.....I love to scuff my feet through the snow.
Hope you are all comfy where ever you are.

Inside Jersey Magazine writes about South Jersey Trails!

I have to imagine my 15 minutes of fame is coming to an end soon, but Inside Jersey Magazine interviewed me as part of a bigger set of articles on the pine barrens.  Thank you to Jenn Hall for reaching out, and for having such a nice little write up!

Mike McCormick, of Barrington, didn’t set out to create the definitive South Jersey hiking guide. It’s just that it didn’t exist. Now, his website, launched in March 2013, covers more than

120 trails, nearly 50 of which are in the Pines. An avid backpacker and history teacher, McCormick, 35, finds ample inspiration to satisfy both interests here. Asked what he brings for a trek, he quips: “My children.”

Can't believe the warm weather we have had this last week. 77* and new records all around us. The deer are back and enjoying our newly planted grass.....we fixed a make-shift fence that they jumped right over.....so much for that. All my flowers are peeking through, so I sprayed them with my "deer off. It's one egg, one cup of milk, mixed up well and put in a quart of water in a spray bottle....it smells awful at first, but that goes away and it doesn't harm the plants. Worked last year, so I'm trying it again.
Ted has the swallow boxes around the lake cleaned out and ready. He stood on the ice just two days ago, not now....there is only a little ice way down at the south end of the lake. Swans, ducks, muskrats are busy on the lake. An otter sat on the ice the other AM eating a fish.
Ted is busy raking and picking up the zillions of pine cones at the Resort. It's a little early to start getting the cabins ready, but if the weather stays like this we will start getting ready for our 49th season.....WOW!!!!!

Theodore Roosevelt National Park – Medora, North Dakota

by southjerseytrails @ South Jersey Trails

Theodore Roosevelt National Park – South and North Unit
Website – https://www.nps.gov/thro/index.htm
Medora, North Dakota

This summer, our big adventure was having a new baby.  But LAST summer we took a month-long road trip out to Montana.

New “National Park” national park #2 for us on this trip was Theodore Roosevelt in North Dakota.  I wasn’t expecting much out of our two night, two day stay, pretty much just another Badlands National Park.  Instead I found a real contender for one of my favorite national parks.

We rolled into Medora in the late afternoon, having stopped a few places in our drive across most of North Dakota to get here.  Our first stop was the rest stop off of I-90, which featured a just closed visitors center and a very pretty view.  Then it was off at the Medora exit and into the southern unit of the park, where we drove past a prarie dog village and set up camp for the night.

As it grew dark, my wife decided to put Tree Rider to bed.  To make things easier, The Pres and I took a drive.  We ended up on a bluff watching a bison watch the sunset.

The the bison and the two of us went to sleep.

The next morning, it was up and to the Visitors Center for the opening.  Behind the Visitors Center was one of Teddy Roosevelt’s cabins from when he lived in the North Dakota badlands.

Also, the beginning of a Teddy Roosevelt obsession for The Pres that is still with him a year later.

We then drove past the prairie dogs and the campground again to get onto the scenic loop drive.  It was very pretty, and we stopped a lot to take pictures.

We then stretched our legs on the Ridgeline Trail (0.6 miles).  It was a steep climb to start…

Go Tree Rider, go!

But the views on the loop at the top were well worth the steps.

And it was oh-so-hard to pick just a few pictures.

Then it was back into the car to finish the loop.

Petrified log.

There was more beautiful scenery, but The Pres flipped out when we drove into the midst of a bison herd.

I’m not sure I’d ever seen him so excited as he was with those bison.

We finished up the loop and drove back past the campsite.

We then drove into town to get a few things done, as well as to let the kids go on a playground and get some play time in.  It was set up like a frontier fort… totally awesome.  Then it was back to our campground, dinner, and another sunset.

In the morning, we packed up camp and hopped in the car.  We drove over an hour to the less visited Northern Unit of the park.  Here was more great scenery and more bison.

Good warning.

Then, it was off to drive across the rest of North Dakota (stopped off at Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site… completing our tour of all three national park units in North Dakota) and a huge [...]

Summer is in full swing

by noreply@blogger.com (deltaresort) @ Burson's Delta Resort

We are into July now and seem to be keeping busy at the resort. It hasn't developed as I wanted, because on June 30, I was coming home from the reoort on my bike after sitting around the camp fire with my sister and family that had just arrived. I started up the hill toward our driveway and knew I couldn't peddle all the way, so stopped, got off and my left foot was kinda down in the ditch where the water runs (when it rains). As I went to take my right leg over my bike to push it on up the hill, I lost my balance, and THUD on the ground I went. A trip to the ER, later x-ray and CAT scan revealed I cracked the ball of my left hip....so to Marquette for a partial replacment of hip on Sunday, home on Tuesday, and I'm recouping at home, Weren't we smart when we built our log home to put a bedroom downstairs on first floor, a bath/sit down shower and higher toilets in the bathrooms. I'm doing well, have the staples out, graduated to a cane from the walker, and continue my exercises under the supervision of my personal trainer, Ted. He is doing double duty as nurse and housekeeper at the resort. That wilh all his work....shingling a roof on #3 right now. We have had many offers of help and will use them if needed later... I'm thankful that it wasn't worse. We will make it. God is good.

Rancocas Creek Paddle- Pemberton to Mt Holly – 8 miles

by southjerseytrails @ South Jersey Trails

Rancocas Creek Canoe Trail – North Branch Rancocas Creek – Birmingham (Pemberton) to Mt. Holly, Burlington County, NJ
Distance: 8 miles
Type: One way
Difficulty: 6 of 10 – blow downs along the first mile can be tricky, but should be way less of a problem in higher water.

Website: Rancocas Creek Canoe Trail – Burlington County Parks

Terrain – Shady section of river with heavy woods on either side, mixed with the backyards of homes along the creek

Put in –
Birmingham Road –  39°58’45.17″N,  74°42’35.59″W – Mile 6.0 on the Rancocas Creek Canoe Trail

Begin portage at Smithville/Take out – 39°59’8.43″N,  74°45’1.56″W (Mile 10 on the Rancocas Creek Canoe Trail)

Put in/end of portage at Smithville –  39°59’9.56″N,  74°45’7.64″W

Pull out –
Mt Holly –  39°59’24.70″N,  74°46’46.65″W (Mile 14 and the end of the Rancocas Creek Canoe trail)

Parking at put in (Birmingham):

Parking at take out (Mt. Holly – Ironworks Park):

For a longer paddle, you can continue from the pull-out here onto the tidal section of Rancocas Creek down to the confluence of the North and South Branches. It’s eight more miles to the takout at Hainsport (which requires going UPSTREAM on the South branch for a mile) and lot of fun, but make sure you are with a falling tide or it can be less fun.

Map:

Note that we went from Mile 6 to Mile 14. We’ll be back for Mile 0 to Mile 6 sometime when the water is higher!

Description:

So, when its in the upper 90s, people who are not so bright take 8 1/2 mile hikes through the pine barrens (whoops) (Okay, it was beautiful) (but such a bad idea) (but such a good idea).

So the NEXT day when it was supposed to be the same upper 90s hot, I went canoeing with Dan and The Pres.  Much better choice.  We grabbed Ol’ Tippecanoe and opted to try an 8 mile run on Rancocas Creek between Pemberton and Mt Holly that was new to us (from miles 6 to 14 on the Rancocas Creek Canoe Trail)

I’m glad we started at Birmingham Road, because, with weeks of pretty much no rain, the water levels were really, really low.  If we had tried to start higher, it would have been a hike instead of a paddle (someone on our Facebook group stated this was the lowest they remember seeing the creek).

Even so, the first mile and half went really slowly due to a million trees we had to pull the canoe over.  What I *think* made this tough was, with the water so low, every tree in the creek became a pull over, when many of these trees would usually just have the Rancocas flow right over the top of them.

Looking back to the road bridge that we just started from.

Someone got to use his new life jacket (thanks Grandma & Granddad!) and his new canoe paddle (thanks Uncle Tom!) from his birthday for the firs time. The Pres was a champ, paddling pretty much the whole eight miles.

This is the sort of fun we ran into for [...]

2017 Spring Greetings from Burson's Delta Resort

by noreply@blogger.com (colbran) @ Burson's Delta Resort

We are anxiously awaiting the snow to melt in places, the roads to dry out, and warmer temps to arrive; then we can say spring has arrived!

It was quite a fall for us after we had a busy summer of 2016.  In September, we started making trips every three weeks to either Rochester or Maplewood, Minnesota, for Ted to receive chemo for a couple of small spots below his windpipe due to the prostate cancer.  We could stay with a good friend's son who lived there, so we would go the day before he would get his “poison” as he called it, and then drive home 8 hours the next day.  We had good weather and then the last scan in January showed no cancer…..GOD IS GOOD!!

Also in December, we saved a trumpeter swan from the icy lake and it didn’t fly away with the others.  After getting it up the hill from the lake (me pushing Ted), it spent the night in our downstairs bathtub.  It was so weak.  We finally found a vet at KI Sawyer who would look at it as she thought it had lead poisoning.  What a wonderful place!  They did x-rays and sure enough, he was full of lead.  They doctored him and just last week he was taken to Iowa to a rehab facility.  Mr. Hisser (as Ted called him) will be a foster father with the cygnets there, as he has heart trouble from the effects of the lead and would not survive back in the wild.  We wondered about his mate (as they mate for life typically), and sure enough, last week she returned (Ted could identify her) with a new mate.

Other than those two events, we enjoyed all the family again for Christmas here.  Brandon is working and snowmobiling when and wherever he can.  He and some friends were up to the UP several times this past winter.  Colby is a freshman at Iowa State and just finished Spring football and is working hard on his Agricultural Engineering degree.  Wyatt is a freshman at UW Stevens Point and loving the musical theater program.  He had one part in a play…he was a corpse.  Gotta start somewhere!  Hannah is a junior in high school and is doing great with her studies.  She played volleyball and basketball and got several UP honors.  Dalaney is in 4th grade and was the manager for Hannah’s basketball team.  She loves to read and she is growing up fast.  She has her own sketch book and does a lot in that.  Scotty is in 3rd grade and is still bowling and participating in karate.  They are busy families!

We will be starting our 55th summer at the resort.  We have so many fond memories.  Keep in touch if you don’t plan a trip our way.

Description –

After we were in the Philadelphia Inquirer (that’s still so bizzare to type), I got a really nice email from Phil Arsenault of the South Jersey Land and Water Trust telling me I should check out their preserve down in Swedesboro/Auburn.  So we did!

The preserve is awesome from the moment that you get there, because there’s Gideon Scull house from about 1790 right next the parking lot, which serves as the headquarters for the South Jersey Land and Water Trust.

From 1938 to 1967, this was a Boy Scout camp for the Cumberland County Council.  Keep an eye out for clues around the preserve that this was a Scout camp, plenty out there!  Then from 1968 until 2009, this was a family campground, before finally coming into the possession of the South Jersey Land and Water Trust.

So off we went down the trails!  We started down what was obviously the access road, which passed an old barn, the remains of a swingset (horse swingset?), a basketball court, and then splits into three directions (although we only noticed two directions at the time).

Down the old access road.

Past the barn.

Odd looking swingset

Right or left? There was also a sharp right that we didn’t spot until later.

We chose left, by which I mean the Pres chose left.  Almost immediately on the right was the Blue Trail, but for now we skipped it and kept walking down the old access road.  After a minute or two (seriously, it’s a tenth of a mile from the turn to the field), we arrived at a good sized open field filled with butterflies and dragonflies that is the end of this road.

Good sized trees.

End of the line… a big ol’ field.

We spent a few minutes looking at birds and insects, we backtracked a short ways to the Blue Trail.

This trail was heavily shaded and had some really great trees.  The trail dropped down to a small brook that we crossed on a few pieces of wood, then crossed a small wet area that Tree Rider wasn’t to thrilled about.  Then it was up a hill to a bench in the woods.  Shortly past this bench, the trail dead ends.  I do love that the end of trails here are [...]

A quick update

by noreply@blogger.com (colbran) @ Burson's Delta Resort

It's a beautiful day in the U.P. today....sunny with just a few high clouds and about 61 degrees!  Bear season with dogs opens tomorrow.  The 8 deer that are coming to Ted's feeder are losing their spots and their coats are getting darker.  They must be getting hungry, as normally there aren't that many.  He also feeds ducks and there are about 30 coming in now for food.  Every time there's a north wind on a cold morning the Canadian geese are migrating overhead too.  I guess Fall is in the air!

Bowie puts focus on felines — Gazette.Net

by Cat Lover @ Pussy Squeeze

advertisement

Bowie officials showed their commitment to both two-legged and four-legged residents by supporting two initiatives aimed at caring for stray and pet cats.

On Nov. 17, Bowie started construction of a “cat room” at City Hall for lost domesticated cats and also formally approved a city-wide “trap-neuter-release,” or TNR, program designed to manage the feral cat population.

There could be more than 3,000 free-roaming cats in Bowie, based on a formula developed by Phoenix-based Petsmart Charities.

The cat holding room is an expansion of a temporary animal shelter built into City Hall in 2011 and is the result of a partnership between the city and Bowie Citizens for Local Animal Welfare, or CLAW.

Tara Kelley-Baker, president of CLAW, and CLAW vice president Michael Semeniuk presented the city with a $20,000 check on Nov. 17 to help fund the approximate $114,000 expansion and will reimburse the city $84,000 when the project is complete, Kelley-Baker said.

Kelley-Baker said the temporary shelter will prevent pet owners and animal control staff from traveling to the Prince George’s County animal shelter in Upper Marlboro as often for lost pets.

Dogs and cats will be housed in the temporary shelter for up to five days before taken to the county shelter, according to Bowie animal control.

“Bowie should be able to take care of its own animals,” Kelley-Baker said. “I think we should set an example for other cities that are able to do this and reduce the strain on the county facility. This is the best thing for Bowie. We’re really excited about it.”

Also on Nov. 17, City Council members agreed to support the TNR program by updating city code and potentially financially investing in it.

Most of the TNR efforts in the city are being organized by local animal welfare group Connie and Teri 4 Animals, said Connie Carter, co-president of Connie and Teri 4 Animals.

The TNR approach seeks to reduce feral cat colonies by neutering them and releasing them back into the wild, as opposed to euthanizing them, Carter said.

“I was extremely pleased to see that the city is now recognizing [TNR] as the way to help the cat population,” she said. “We see from working with the animals from the [Prince George’s County] shelter that there is a large cat population because we see them coming in all the time.”

Lila Pavelec of Bowie said she has been conducting TNR for 10 years and has released around 900 animals.

“Feral cats were created by people who were irresponsible, did not get their animals fixed, and released them out the door because they like to go outside,” she said. “We created this problem and we need to fix it. The only way to end it is catch these cats one at a time.”

Steve Roberts, who oversees Bowie’s animal control department, said both the new TNR program and the additional cat room will be assets to the city.

“We support and believe that TNR is very important and it’s being conducted in Bowie as we speak so we want to support that,” he said. “Our main objective [with lost pets] is to return any pet we find straight to its owner, and with the five days [pets can be held in the temporary shelter], this will allow us more time.”

2015 Spring Greetings from Burson’s Delta Resort

Hello to all from the Bursons!  First let me apologize for the lateness of our Spring letter.  Usually I have it mailed by the middle of March or at least the first of April, not so this year.  Let me explain!

We had all the family here for Christmas.  It started out with 2-1/2 days without electricity due to a widespread snowstorm.  We managed with the gas cooking stove, the generator, the cold temperatures which kept the food safe, and the boys getting water from the lake by the dock to use to flush toilets.  Needless to say, EVERY ONE of the 11 here (plus Brandon’s girlfriend) were happy to see the Alger-Delta trucks repairing the lines.  We DID have fun….played games, visited (not by texting) and just enjoyed each other’s company and what the “olden days” were like.

In March we took our annual trip to Iowa to see Dana, Jim and the boys and also to work at the Walcott Lions fish fry.  We always get to see our old friends and students from when we lived there.  After a week in Iowa, we drove to Florida and stayed with friends on the Gulf side where they stay at Homosassa Springs.  They took us all around the area!  We took a pontoon ride to see the manatees, ate fresh shrimp, went to Tarpon Springs for a trip out into the Gulf for shell looking, and of course took in Greek food.  We also visited a high school friend of Ted’s in Ocala and our former minister and his wife from Walcott in Apopka.  The weather was great (a little warm at 91° one day) but they can keep the traffic there!  We left there and spent time in Savannah, Georgia and had a lovely time visiting the historic places, and then went to visit friends in South Carolina and North Carolina and on to Ted’s sisters in Indiana before returning to reality and SNOW in the UP.

We were home less than a week when I got mixed up with a throw rug in the garage, fell down on the cement, scraped my arm on the wood step and ran my bottom teeth through my bottom lip!  Had to go to the ER for stitches but I’m thankful it wasn’t any worse.  Before Easter, Ted developed sinus congestion after a couple of migraine headaches and had blurred vision in his right eye.  So, another trip to the ER, then the eye doctor, and finally up to Marquette for a brain MRI.  They found no reason for the eye trouble but pressure from his sinuses.  He still isn’t up to par and is trying to get his strength back.  If you know Ted, he’s the Energizer bunny and this is not easy.  The doctor says it’s a virus and it has to run its course….it’s not running fasting enough for Ted!

That brings us to the middle of April.  We are “thinking” about summer and have been getting reservations.  I’m not sure how we are going to do everything this summer, but we will sure try.  We will be starting our 53rdseason with the first 18 years here with Ted’s parents in the summer.  After they were gone, the last 35 years have been just us.  The girls and families help out when they can, but they are all busy with jobs, school and activities too.  We’ll be rounding up a couple of the grandsons to get things jump started at the end of May, so that will help!

We’re looking forward to seeing you if we’re in your plans.  If not, God’s blessings on you and your families!

It's Fall!!

by noreply@blogger.com (colbran) @ Burson's Delta Resort

It's a gorgeous Autumn day here.   The many colored leaves are blanketing the ground and the air is filled with smells and sounds of Fall.   We have 7  trumpeter "swans a swimming" on the lake and trying to establish seniority by flapping their wings and chasing each other.   What a racket....we love it!

Bow season has begun and what a glorious time to be out in the woods; small game season too, and we've seen some ruffed grouse.

Gun season for deer will begin in November.   We still have a couple openings for hunters.   We'll be open for the first week, November 15th through the 22nd, so let us hear from you if you need a comfortable place to stay!

February Update

by noreply@blogger.com (deltaresort) @ Burson's Delta Resort

Snowing softly this AM...it drifts down and covers the pine trees around our log home. Ted has been out to feed the muskrats at the lake...he must chop a hole in the ice for the corn. We took a "short cut" coming home from getting the mail yesterday...got on the ice at the pier and walked over to the house.....there is about 10" of ice, not really enough for me...Ha. It's a funny feeling when you get out in the middle of the lake.
15 turkeys are coming each day, and we just had 3 pileated woodpeckers flying about. One big one landed on a birch tree outside the garage. We are hearing more birds.....wonder if Spring will be early?????
Hope all of you had a sweet Valentine's Day.
Ted is excited about getting a '28 Model A sedan, all restored...it is in the heated garage here and he's out there most of the day.....sighing or ? whatever you do. It is a beauty. I will TRY to get some pictures on the site.
Have a good day.

Baby’s 1st Hike!

by southjerseytrails @ South Jersey Trails

So eight days after the baby was born, he went out for his first hike at Crows Woods in Haddonfield.

While he slept through most of it, he bravely went 0.6 miles through the woods anyway.

The Pres and Tree Rider are pretty psyched about it.

Also, we have decided that, for purposes of this blog, he is to be dubbed “Kite Flyer”.

I also want to publicly recognize that my wife is a very patient and understanding and, frankly, awesome woman who thinks taking babies out hiking at 8 days is perfectly acceptable (also, tough).

Description –

At late July day?  A new baby?  Two kids bouncing off the walls?  So out the door The Pres, Tree Rider, and I went to get some energy used up.

We ended up at the new Tranquility Trails, unveiled in late Spring 2017.  These are very much a work in progress, with blazes, maps, and markers coming at some point, but we were able to follow the mowed path for 0.8 miles one way.

You start at the back corner of the parking lot…

Enjoy the flowers as you walk by them, then enter the woods.

This is your longest patch of shade on the trail, so if its late July like it was for us, enjoy!

You’ll then emerge out of the woods at a “t” intersection.  The path to the right was more overgrown than the path to the left, so we went left.

You’ll then follow the edge of a field.  Keep an eye out for birds along the way, and, if the time of year is right like it was for us, enjoy the bajillion flowers.

After a nice long stretch of field, you’ll enter a small patch of woods.  Keep an eye out for the bee hives here!

Old hunting stand.

Then its back out into open fields again for more flowers!  Yay!

We turned a corner and ran into a gate… end of hiking out!

There are supposed to be views of the creek at some point, but we didn’t find them this trip.  Maybe next time!  For now, we turned around and backtracked.

We thought about heading down the slightly more overgrown trail we’d previously walked past, but we opted not to.

So back we went to the parking lot.

Nearby: Oldmans Creek Preserve and Lake Narraticon are both nearby in Swedesboro.

Penns Hill Trail – Wells Mills County Park – Waretown, NJ

by southjerseytrails @ South Jersey Trails

My buddy Pat and I went hiking at the height of the July heat at Wells Mills.  Luckily, it was in the upper 90s with a million percent humidity.  And we decided to do the Penns Hill Trail (labeled at the Marci Trail on the maps, but different on the signs)… 8.4 miles.

Regardless of death heat trying to crush me, this is one of my new favorites in South Jersey, so you know it must be good.

For the review and a million pictures, check the now UPDATED post for Wells Mills County Park, where we added all about the new-to-us trail and our grand (aka, hot) adventure that thankfully had blueberries:

Council weighing ban on pet rabbit sales

by Cat Lover @ Pussy Squeeze

Forgoing the carrot-and-stick approach, the City Council is moving to outlaw the sale of rabbits, because the cuddly creatures are multiplying like, well, rabbits.

The council’s Elmer Fudd edict wouldn’t force owners to give up bunnies already in their homes.

But a bill, which had a second public hearing Monday, would make it illegal for pet shops to “display, offer for sale, deliver, barter, auction, give away, transfer or sell” the little critters.

“Rabbits are the third most commonly surrendered animal in city shelters following dogs and cats,” said Christine Mott, who heads the city Bar Association’s Committee on Animal Law.

“They’re frequently dumped in city parks and brought to city shelters. There’s simply not enough room.”

The bunny ban is part of a broader bill that would prohibit pet shops from buying dogs from “puppy mills,” require more dogs to be licensed and give the city stricter enforcement powers over pet stores.

The portion on rabbits was added two weeks ago, said Councilwoman Liz Crowley (D-Queens).

“During holiday times — especially Easter — they’re purchased and often they’re purchased in pairs,” she said after a meeting of the council’s Health Committee.

“That’s why they reproduce so much.”

San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago have all banned pet stores from selling rabbits. Petco stopped selling them in 2008.

Unlike dogs and cats, rabbits are more difficult to spay and neuter. When they’re young, it’s hard to determine their gender, which means pet-shop clerks often unwittingly sell customers a boy and girl instead of a same-sex pair.

“That pair turns into 40 bunnies in six months,” Mott said.

Owners are then faced with a daunting choice — keep the growing brood, or turn some of them loose, either at a shelter or in the urban wild.

Their increased popularity has led to the number of unwanted rabbits nearly doubling in city-funded Animal Care and Control shelters — from 216 in 2011 to 399 last year, Crowley said.

Risa Weinstock, the agency’s executive director, noted that city shelters are “at maximum capacity for rabbits.”

And that doesn’t even begin to count the hundreds, if not thousands, released into parks.

“Most of these rabbits are not rescued,” said Natalie Reeves, founder of Big Apple Bunnies. “Most of them get eviscerated by dogs, cats, raccoons, hawks and killed by parasites before they can be rescued.”

Not everyone is in favor of the ban, though.

The Petland Discount shop on Nassau Street in lower Manhattan sells between four and eight rabbits a day, a clerk said.

“People love rabbits,” he said.

A vote on the bill has not been scheduled.

Voyageurs National Park – International Falls, Minnesota

by southjerseytrails @ South Jersey Trails

Voyageurs National Park
Website – https://www.nps.gov/voya/index.htm
International Falls, Minnesota

This summer, our big adventure was having a new baby.  But LAST summer we took a month-long road trip out to Montana.

Our destination for Day #4 was Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota, way up on the border with Canada, and our first new “National Park” National Park for this trip.

This park is mostly water, but we decided to start out with a hike on Lake Kabetogama.  The hike starts just around the corner from the Ash River Visitors Center and was three miles.

We then drove up to International Falls and cut down to the Rainy Lake Visitors Center, where we had tickets for “The Grand Tour”, a 2 1/2 hour ride on Rainy Lake.

Partway through the ride, the boat pulls up and disembarks on Little American Island.  Here there was a gold rush in 1893, complete with a wild west style boom town.  Everything was abandoned by 1901, but today you can take a quick 1/4 mile ranger hike as part of the boat tour.

Old mine, now filled with water.

Back on the boat, it was time to search for wildlife.  And the wildlife most people want to see here are bald eagles.  We had an average day for bald eagle sightings… six!

Old mine shaft.

We were pretty excited.

Beaver lodge.

Too much excitement = nap time on the boat.

Our boat tour over, we headed back to International Falls to camp for the night (all camping in the park itself is backcountry or at the Kettle Falls Hotel.  Either way, boat access only!  Maybe next time!)

The next morning, we came back to the park, the highlight of which was The Pres earned his very first Junior Ranger badge.  He was very proud.

Then it was off across Minnesota toward our next stop, Lake Itasca and the headwaters of the Mississippi River.

Our previous day?  Apolostle Islands National Lakeshore – Bayfield, Wisconsin

Our next day? Itasca State Park, Clearwater County, Minnesota
