Doctors Take an Oath to Do No Harm, but as They Rarely Disclose Medical Malpractice, How Would You Know?

Most everyone knows that a doctor takes an oath to “do no harm”. Chip and Joanna Gaines Share Their Hilarious First Date Story

Chip and Joanna Gaines Share Their Hilarious First Date Story

by Megan Stein @ PEOPLE.com

Chip and Joanna Gaines are the definition of marriage goals, but their relationship didn’t necessarily have a fairytale start.

In the first chapter of The Magnolia Storyreleased as a sneak peek today, the Fixer Upper dream team spills the details of how they met — and it wasn’t exactly love at first sight.

Joanna agreed to go out on a date with Chip after meeting him and his roommate “Hot John” — who she actually tried to approach minutes earlier, but was too shy — in the waiting room of her dad’s auto shop. She had second thoughts, however, after Chip arrived an hour and a half late to pick her up.

“He didn’t apologize for being late, either. He had so much confidence. I don’t know. I can’t explain it. Only Chip could be an hour and a half late and have no one mad about it,” Joanna writes.

The chapter continues to describe the timeline of their relationship, which didn’t actually start until months after they first went out, when Chip (in typical guy fashion) finally called Joanna back.

“I’d made a bet with Hot John to see who could hold out the longest before calling our dates back,” Chip writes “I really wanted that fifty dollars from John! That’s the only reason I didn’t call.”

After they went out a second time, the rest was history.

Girl Scout Cookie Baking Mixes to Hit Stores Nationwide

Girl Scout Cookie Baking Mixes to Hit Stores Nationwide

Samoas in cupcake form was a thing we never knew we needed, but now it’s the only thing we can think about.

Pillsbury just unveiled Girl Scout Cookie baking mixes, which are available in Thin Mints and Caramel & Coconut – a.k.a. Samoas – flavors. The four new mixes are for baking cupcakes, brownies and blondies — unfortunately, you won’t be able to make actual Girl Scout Cookies, because that would put a lot of 7-year-olds out of business.

“Families can try out their favorite cookie flavors in the form of brownies, cupcakes, and blondies, while they wait for the real thing once a year during Girl Scout Cookie season,” said Girl Scouts of the USA chief revenue officer Barry Horowitz in a statement.

GSC loyalists are, to put it mildly, freaking out.

The mixes, now available nationwide, retail for $3.29 each — almost $2 less than what you’d pay for a box of cookies.

Easily the best part of all this news is the fact that we will now be able to eat Girl Scout Cookie dough, something we never thought would be possible in our lifetimes!

Madonna Wishes Her Daughter Lourdes a Happy Birthday With Sweet Instagram Tribute: 'You Are Always in My Heart'

Madonna Wishes Her Daughter Lourdes a Happy Birthday With Sweet Instagram Tribute: 'You Are Always in My Heart'

by Maria Pasquini @ PEOPLE.com

Madonna doesn’t have to justify her love on her daughter’s birthday!

On Saturday, Madonna wished her eldest daughter Lourdes Leon a happy 21st birthday with a trio of touching photos on Instagram.

“Whether you are in Cuba…or in Kenya…or in our own backyard, you are always in my heart. Happy birthday Lola,” the proud mama wrote alongside a series of throwback photos of her daughter from around the world, ending with an absolutely adorable snap of the mother-daughter duo sharing a precious moment at home.

Leon — a senior at the University of Michigan — is the daughter of Madonna and her former flame Carlos Leon.

And this isn’t the first time Madonna’s gotten sentimental on her daughter’s birthday. Last year she shared this adorable close-up of her daughter’s face writing, “Happy birthday to my beautiful princess L.O.L.I.T.A.” she wrote, adding, “Never forget who you are little star.”

But even though Leon — and the rest of Madonna’s children — are all growing up, the singer says being a parent hasn’t gotten any easier.

“I had this funny notion that when your children get older, they learn to take care of themselves and it gets easier,” Madonna previously told PEOPLE. “But actually, the older they get, the more challenging it gets — because now they’re becoming adults, and they really need guidance.”

And Madonna is certainly not afraid to offer her guidance, even when it’s in the form of tough love.

“I’m bad-cop, I’m the one that says no,” she adds. “I accept that role. I’m not the popular parent.”

Long Distance Relationships

by @ WRIS Web Services

As you may be aware, WRIS moved to a new office space a few months ago. We stayed in the same city...our main office is still based out of Solon, OH.

What you may not be aware of, though, is that in addition to our Solon location, we have WRIS designers and developers based out of Boston, MA; Charlotte, NC; Washington, D.C.; Portland, OR; Orlando, FL; Charleston, SC; and Atlanta, GA.

So yeah, we’re all over the place.

And you know what else is all over the place? Our clients. Here’s a visual of some of the cities where we currently have clients:

As you can see, we’re crossing the Atlantic and it’s great!

We make sure that all of our clients, no matter where they are, receive the same first-class customer service that we pride ourselves on delivering. No, we aren’t jumping on a flight every other day (although we DO schedule visits as needed). We are taking advantage of virtual technology and it’s allowing us to conduct business as usual.

Obviously, because we are in the development business our work is online. Clients have instant access to their project in a development environment from anywhere they have internet access. In addition, we use an online project management tool that keeps track of all correspondence and project-related information in one easy-to-use portal. Clients can be updated and monitor progress 24/7.

We can also have real-time conversations at any time. Tools like Google Chat and Slack make it easy to communicate efficiently without worrying about the time zone.

When it’s not possible to be in the same physical location for a meeting, we take advantage of tools like Google Hangouts. It allows you to conference in on audio and/or video, so it feels like you’re right there. You can even do a screen share, letting all participants see what you’re seeing and watch what you’re doing.

Our own internal ticket system allows all of our clients to submit support requests 24/7, with alerts being sent to the entire support team. That’s always been in place. But now we’ve added another level with the use of Jira. This ticketing system allows for tracking of all of the intricate details and complex layers involved with web and software development. Team members can track progress, upload screenshots, and even comment back and forth all within the same ticket.

So wherever you are, if we provide a service you need, we can deliver.

Lisa Bloom Says She Made a 'Colossal Mistake' in Representing Harvey Weinstein: 'I Definitely Failed on This One'

Lisa Bloom Says She Made a 'Colossal Mistake' in Representing Harvey Weinstein: 'I Definitely Failed on This One'

by Maria Pasquini @ PEOPLE.com

Lisa Bloom doesn’t look back fondly on her time working with Harvey Weinstein.

In an interview with BuzzFeed News published on Saturday, the famed attorney said it was “a colossal mistake” to work with the movie mogul.

“I can see that my just being associated with this was a mistake,” Bloom, 56, said. “All I can say is, from my perspective, I thought, ‘Here is my chance to get to the root of the problem from the inside. I am usually on the outside throwing stones. Here is my chance to be in the inside and to get a guy to handle this thing in a different way.’ ”

“I thought that would be a positive thing,” she continued. “But clearly it did not go over at all.”

Just a few days after The New York Times published a revealing exposé in which eight women, including actress Ashley Judd, spoke out against Weinstein, accused him of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior, Bloom resigned as his advisor.

“I have resigned as an advisor to Harvey Weinstein,” Bloom wrote on Twitter. “My understanding is that Mr. Weinstein and his board are moving toward an agreement.”

Bloom explained this decision to BuzzFeed saying that what she first agreed to advise Weinstein, she had no idea about his alleged sexual misconduct — she just thought he needed help reining in his anger at work. (She had been hired before the Times article was published.) But as the allegations started piling up she says she was “absolutely shocked.”

“I am not an actress … this may be something that they knew about, but I did not,” Bloom continued. “Before all this became public, there were plenty of people who thought he was a great guy. So we have to be careful about looking at things in hindsight. I think many people who worked with him did not know.”

“I will just make the best choices I can out of every situation,” she added. “I have clearly not been successful. I think anybody who does big bold things fails. And I definitely failed on this one.”

Bloom — who made a name for herself as a women’s rights advocate while representing celebrities such as Mischa Barton, Blac Chyna, Kathy Griffin, and many of the female clients who claimed to be sexually harassed by former Fox News anchor Bill O’Reilly — had been highly criticized for her decision to stand by Weinstein.

At the time she resigned, Bloom tweeted, “As a women’s rights advocate, I have been blunt with Harvey and he has listened to me. I have told him the times have changed, it is 2017, and he needs to evolve to a higher standard. I have found Harvey to be refreshingly candid and receptive to my message. He has acknowledged the mistakes he has made. … He is an old dinosaur and learning new ways.”

“Harvey is not going to demean or attack any of the women making accusations against him, although he does dispute many of the allegations. Instead, he is going to use this as a painful learning experience to grow into a better man,” she continued. “I will make recommendations to ensure that gender equality and zero tolerance for workplace misconduct aren’t just goals, but a reality.”

But the criticism for Bloom wasn’t just coming from media outlets and Twitter users — it was coming from her mother, power lawyer Gloria Allred.

RELATED VIDEO: Heidi Klum Speaks Out Against Harvey Weinstein as He’s Stripped of Executive Producer Credit on Project Runway

“Lisa is my daughter and I love and respect her. She has her own law firm separate from mine. She makes her own independent decisions on who she will or will not represent, and I have no role in her decisions,” Allred said to TIME. “Had I been asked by Mr. Weinstein to represent him, I would have declined, because I do not represent individuals accused of sex harassment. I only represent those who allege that they are victims of sexual harassment.”

“While I would not represent Mr. Weinstein, I would consider representing anyone who accused Mr. Weinstein of sexual harassment, even if it meant that my daughter was the opposing counsel,” Allred added.

Bloom responded to her mother’s remarks by telling Variety, “I have a different kind of law practice. My mother does only plaintiff side discrimination and harassment work. I have a successful, 12-lawyer general practice law firm that includes business litigation, defamation, revenge porn cases, entertainment matters, family law, and much more. … I believe that we can do good by suing, but also working behind the scenes to encourage accused people to respond with dignity and respect.”

“I would never take a case where either my lawyer mother or my lawyer daughter is opposing counsel,” Bloom continued. “That’s another area where we differ. I believe in family before business.”

Although Bloom told BuzzFeed “there is definitely a rift with my mother now,” on Friday, Allred shared a Facebook message which suggested their relationship wasn’t as strained as it might have seemed. “I would like to say that my daughter Lisa Bloom is and and always has been a champion for women’s rights,” Allred said, adding that,“Nothing that has happened in the recent past has altered my views of Lisa’s commitment to protecting and advancing women’s rights.”

Meanwhile Bob Weinstein — Harvey’s brother and business partner — told The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday that Harvey is “sick and depraved” and that he hopes he gets “the justice that he deserves”

“This hurts, but I don’t feel an ounce of remorse coming from him, and that kills me too,” Bob said. “When I heard his written, lame excuse… Not an excuse. When I heard his admission of feeling remorse for the victims and then him cavalierly, almost crazily saying he was going to go out and take on the NRA, it was so disturbing to me. It was utter insanity. My daughters all felt sick hearing this because we understood he felt nothing. I don’t feel he feels anything to this day. I don’t.”

Bob has also maintained that even though they were brothers, he had no idea what was going on. “For the last five years, I’ve probably talked to my brother ten times on any personal level,” he said, adding that, “ I actually was quite aware that Harvey was philandering with every woman he could meet. I was sick and disgusted by his actions. But that’s the extent of what … I thought they were all consensual situations.”

“I’ll tell you what I did know,” he continued. “Harvey was a bully, Harvey was arrogant, he treated people like s—t all the time. That I knew. And I had to clean up for so many of his employee messes. People that came in crying to my office: ‘Your brother said this, that and the other.’ And I’d feel sick about it.”

Weinstein has since been fired from his former studio, The Weinstein Company, and wife Georgina Chapman announced she’s leaving him.

Following the NYT report about the allegations, Weinstein said in a statement that he was working with therapists and planned to “deal with this issue head-on.”

On Tuesday, The New Yorker revealed — among 13 different women’s accounts of alleged sexual harassment, assault or rape — that the mogul allegedly forcibly performed oral sex on Italian actress Asia Argento two decades ago. Actresses Mira Sorvino and Rosanna Arquette also claimed that after rejecting Weinstein’s unwanted advances, they were removed from or kept from being hired for projects.

On Tuesday, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and several other women added their own accounts of alleged mistreatment, and more than two dozen women have now come forward.

“Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein,” a spokesperson for the movie mogul has said.

On Thursday, PEOPLE reported that Weinstein checked into a luxury resort in Arizona after jetting out of Los Angeles on Wednesday. The source said the movie mogul was staying at the five-star hotel (which boasts a spa and golf course) because “he doesn’t want to go a place where he can’t use his cell phone.”

“His team set him up at a secure place to get him the help he needs — he knows and wants help,” said another source close to the situation.

Freedom of the Press

by @ WRIS Web Services

WordPress, that is.

If you are online in any capacity, chances are you’ve at least heard of WordPress. It’s a development language that is used to create websites and blogs. It’s open source, and it’s generally affordable. But just like everything, it has its pros and cons.

WordPress is not hard to find. Just about any developer can work with it...even if it’s not their primary development language. You can even build a WordPress site on your own, and many do. But while building your own website may seem appealing, the resulting website may not be able to say the same. Creating a website can be overwhelming, so whether you decide to start the process yourself before seeking assistance or you opt to work with a developer from the beginning, those resources shouldn’t be hard to find. Which also comes in handy if you already have a WordPress site but need some help with it.

Open Source

What does this mean exactly? Well, when a development language is classified as open source, it basically means that enhancements and improvements can be created and contributed by developers everywhere. Someone may find themselves with a need, design a solution to it, and then decide to share it with the rest of the WordPress community. This saves someone else from having to come up with a solution to the same problem. They just search to see if something (specifically a plugin, see below) already exists, download it, install it, and wa-la! Problem solved. The confusion arises when there are several solutions for the same issue. Which one is best? Which will work for you? You might end up installing an enhancement only to find it doesn’t do what you thought it would. A developer with experience can help pinpoint the solution that will be best for you.

What are these? Think of them as additions to your core website. Need a tool to help you create tables easily on your pages? Search for a plugin. Want to be able to display a real-time stock ticker? Search for a plugin. Want to integrate with an ecommerce partner? Plugin. Just about anything you can imagine can be achieved with a plugin. This saves time if you hit the mark with the first one you try, but can be a real pain if you have several misses along the way. (See above re: how a developer with experience can help with this.)

If it fits your needs, WordPress is definitely more affordable than custom development. It can be a viable solution for smaller companies, or even bigger companies that don’t need a supersized, complex website. After all, it doesn’t need to be written from scratch. It has solutions to new problems available almost every day, often for little to no cost. And it’s readily available. Of course, not every problem can be solved with a plugin. Plus, because it is a language meant to be universally appealing, there are a lot of features you will never use but will still have to wade through because they are part of the package. It can be confusing. Which is why working with a developer can help you streamline the tools you need so that you end up with a site that functions the way you need it to function.

It makes sense that if you are not creating something from scratch (custom development), you are not only going to see cost-savings but time-savings as well. The time to create a WordPress site is generally weeks vs. months, so if time is of the essence, WordPress might be a good fit for you.

Is WordPress right for you? Let us help you figure that out and you’ll be on your way to a fresh site in no time.

Julia Roberts Reveals She Told Her Husband About James Corden’s NSFW Nickname for Him

by Maria Pasquini @ PEOPLE.com

Julia Roberts had something very interesting to tell her husband on Friday.

On the way to the eighth annual amFAR gala in Los Angeles, Roberts broke the news to her husband — cinematographer Daniel Moder — that James Corden had a very revealing nickname for him.

During Wednesday’s episode of The Late Late Show, Corden told Roberts that he’d met her husband before, adding that, “I call him big d–k.”

“I just told him in the car on the way here,” Roberts told Extra at the amFAR event, explaining that her husband had just gotten back from a shoot and had no idea about what had happened. “I said, ‘Okay, I’m gonna tell you a little something that James talked about when I did his show…’ He was like, ‘Oh, wow.’ ”

Roberts was honored at the amFAR Gala with the Award of Courage for her work in the fight against AIDS. Corden served as the host for the evening.

“I prefer not to bring too much attention to things that I am going to accomplish as a human, so it’s a little bit of a paradox, but at the same time it is such an incredible moment to really remind people how far we have come in the fight against AIDS and how far there is to go, but we have to keep at it,” Roberts told Extra.

Alex Rodriguez Says Telling His Daughters About His Performance-Enhancement Drug Scandal Was 'The Hardest Thing'

Alex Rodriguez Says Telling His Daughters About His Performance-Enhancement Drug Scandal Was 'The Hardest Thing'

by Maria Pasquini @ PEOPLE.com

Alex Rodriguez says taking performance-enhancing drugs cost him a lot — but the hardest part of the scandal was telling his two daughters.

In a preview of Wednesday’s episode of the Undeniable Show with Joe Buck Rodriguez, 42, talked about what life was like for him after he admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs in 2014.

“This thing cost me over $40 million and it cost me my reputation and it may have cost me the hall of fame and a number of other things,” the former Yankees player said. “And I remember sitting there at night — at 4, 5 o’clock in the morning — I probably did this a hundred nights, and I would look up with tears and say, ‘How the f did I get myself in this position. I’m the only jackass that has pocket aces and figures out a way to lose the hand.”

But he also admitted that the the “hardest part” was admitting to his two daughters — Ella Alexander, 9, and Natasha Alexander, 12 — that he made the mistake.

At the time he told his then-wife Cynthia, “When I sit down with the girls, they’re gonna be listening to me but they’re gonna be looking at you. And chances are I’m not gonna make it past first base because I’m gonna probably start breaking down — and sure enough I almost didn’t get out of first plate.”

“And doing that, admitting that to them and then having them embrace me and hug me and to a degree forgive me, as I look forward, Joe, I think about, you know, I never want to put myself in a position that I have to explain myself to my daughters ever again.”

Nate Berkus is the expert on all things party planning. But since becoming a father to one-year-old daughter, Poppy, the designer’s go-to entertaining style has had a few changes.

“We entertain around her nap schedule now,” Berkus, artistic advisor for LG Studio, told PEOPLE at a breakfast on June 8, which celebrated the sleek line of high-end appliances he helped design.

But when Poppy isn’t snoozing, Berkus, 44, and husband Jeremiah Brent, 31, keep her busy with poolside play dates that are a far cry from a formal outdoor gathering.

“Our home is now filled with blow up toys from Target in the pool as opposed to margaritas,” Berkus said.

And the menu planning is even simpler.

“We throw food on the barbecue, we’ve actually even had a taco truck come once,” Berkus said. “We do put out snacks for the little ones, and they sit and throw them in the pool.”

James Corden Rips into Harvey Weinstein at amFAR Gala and Gets a Mixed Reaction from the Crowd

James Corden Rips into Harvey Weinstein at amFAR Gala and Gets a Mixed Reaction from the Crowd

by Maria Pasquini and Reagan Alexander @ PEOPLE.com

James Corden’s Harvey Weinstein jokes are not to everyone’s tastes.

At the eighth annual amFAR gala in Beverly Hills on Friday, Corden — who was the host of the event — made some Weinstein jokes which got a mixed reaction from the celebrity-filled crowd.

“This is a beautiful room, this is a beautiful night here in L.A. It is so beautiful that Harvey Weinstein has already asked tonight up to his hotel room to give him a massage,” Corden said, in reference to some of the numerous sexual harassment claims made against the Hollywood mogul.

A writer from The Hollywood Reporter shared a video of Corden’s speech, revealing that while the comedian’s joke did get some laughter, it also got some audible groans.

“I don’t know whether that groan was that you liked that joke, or you don’t like the joke,” Corden continued. “If you don’t like the joke, you should probably leave right now.”

And that wasn’t the end of the Weinstein-related material. “It has been weird this week though hasn’t it, watching Harvey Weinstein in hot water, ask any of the women who watched him take a bath, it’s weird watching Harvey Weinstein in hot water. Harvey Weinstein wanted to come tonight but he’ll settle for whatever potted plant is closest,” the comedian continued, before seemingly commenting on the lack of laughter coming from the audience. “Come on!”

While Corden didn’t seem like he got the reaction he was looking for from the crowd, they were all laughing when he moved on to some different material. “We would like to thank our sponsors tonight, Moet, Hennessy, and Cadillac, which, if you ask me, sounds like a dangerous combination. I am incredibly pleased to be here as a host of a late-nite talk show that airs at 12:37 on CBS, no one is more qualified to be hosting a charity event then me.”

He then went on to introduce the woman of the hour, Julia Roberts, who was getting presented with the Award of Courage for her work in the fight against AIDS.

“Of course we are all here to honor the incredible Julia Roberts,” he said. “I will never forget the first time that I met Julia Roberts, I was appearing in a play, in 2006 on Broadway, and our theatre backed on to the theatre that Julia was working in, and one night i saw her in a restaurant, i will never forget it, I walked over, and she said, “I would like the herb-crusted salmon and a Diet Coke. And I said, ‘‘No, I am an actor in the play next door to yours …’ And she said, “Okay, would like the herb-crusted salmon and a Diet Coke.’ ”

RELATED VIDEO: James Corden Reveals His ‘Quite Terrifying’ Recurring Nightmare

Of course that wasn’t the only cheeky thing Corden said to Roberts this week.

During Wednesday’s episode of The Late Late Show, Corden revealed to the actress that he had a very revealing nickname for her husband: “I call him big d–k.”

“I just told him in the car on the way here,” Roberts told Extra at the amFAR event, explaining that her husband — cinematographer Daniel Moder — had just gotten back from a shoot and had no idea about what had happened. “I said, ‘Okay, I’m gonna tell you a little something that James talked about when I did his show…’ He was like, ‘Oh, wow.’ ”

That Time Your Website Redesign Didn't Go As Planned

by @ WRIS Web Services

If your website has been around for any length of time, you’ve probably gone through a redesign or at least a round of significant updates. Hopefully, each time has been a great success and you’ve never looked back. But for the rest of us there’s likely been at least one time when we thought...OMG, what have we done?

It might have been obvious right from the start. The moment the new site was launched it became crystal clear that not every change was for the better. Or, it might have taken a while for the reality to set in….maybe customer feedback wasn’t as positive as you’d hoped, or maybe the proof was in the analytics and your site’s performance started to tank.

Whatever the case, if you find yourself in that situation, you know you have to do something. But what? Ideally, whoever you partnered with on your redesign will work with you to help you feel comfortable with the state of your website. Maybe you can work together to come up with a solution.

But what if they can’t or won’t? Believe it or not, it is possible to salvage a redesign gone wrong if you have the right web development partner.

First step is to identify the problem. Is it just the look and feel of the site that isn’t working? Did it look good in development but now in the real world it’s just not a good fit for your company? If so, some simple graphic changes might do the trick. A color change here, a font change there, an additional image there, you might be surprised what these types of updates can do. Or, maybe the look is fine but somehow it wasn't built in a responsive format. Believe it or not, many sites can be retro-fitted as mobile-friendly while still retaining the integrity of the branding.

Maybe it’s not the look and feel, though. Maybe it’s the overall flow of the site that your customers are finding cumbersome. Did you move things around in a way your customers don’t appreciate? Has it become too difficult to navigate your site? Again, you might be able to fix things with just a few changes. Renaming navigation, combining unnecessary clicks, even just changing the position of a link might make all the difference. You just need to think about how your customers use the site and go from there. A web development partner can help you make sure your site’s usability meets your customers’ needs.

But maybe it’s not the front-end of the site at all. Maybe your customers love it but the content management system is not as easy and straightforward as promised. If you can’t maintain your site and make updates easily, you’ll just end up frustrated with a site that slowly becomes stagnant. Hopefully, your site is built on a platform that is conducive to back-end updates and additions and allows a good web developer the opportunity to give you what you need.

Whatever the reason for the dissatisfaction, if there’s a way to fix it without starting over, a good web development team will help you do that. So find one. In the end, you might decide that it doesn’t make sense to try to fix it because it’s just too broken. Does this mean you have to start from scratch? Yes and no.

Every website is different and functionality can range from the most basic to the most complex. If it makes sense, you can take advantage of a design template that can be modified to your branding. Leverage a development platform providing functionality that is customizable but not custom, and including a content management system that can be as robust or simplistic as you need. Yes, this means another redesign project, but not necessarily the same redesign budget.

So if your redesign did not go as planned, don’t throw in the towel but do take action. The sooner you admit defeat, find a web development partner, and get on the road to recovery, the sooner you’ll find you and your site on victory lane.

Woman Dies in Husband’s Arms as They Try to Escape California Fires in Their Pool While on Vacation

Woman Dies in Husband’s Arms as They Try to Escape California Fires in Their Pool While on Vacation

by Dave Quinn @ PEOPLE.com

A woman in Santa Rosa, California, died on Monday after spending the night seeking shelter in a pool as flames from the California wildfires engulfed the hilltop rental house she was vacationing in without warning.

Carmen Berriz, 75, became one of the 31 victims in the deadly wildfires currently sweeping through California’s wine country, CNN reported.

By her side at the time of her death was 76-year-old Armando Berriz, her husband of 55 years.

The pair were traveling with their daughter Monica Ocon, her husband Luis Ocon and their granddaughter in what has become an annual getaway for the blended family — taken as combined Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and birthday gift, The San Francisco Chronicle reported. This year they had chosen the famed wine country in norther California, and spent three days touring wineries and lounging in their house.

They had all played board games that evening, unaware that deadly flames from the quick-spreading inferno were heading their way. Luis told CNN it was around 1 a.m. that he finally noticed the red glow of the embers outside, upon turning off the lights in the house.

“It was like an explosion. It just lit up,” Luis remembered, explaining that fire had surrounded the house within moments. “It’s hard to explain unless you were there. It went from embers to complete engulfment, completely around us, in 30 seconds, 40 seconds at most.”

“It looked like something you see in an apocalypse movie,” he said.

Fleeing for safety, the family split themselves up into three cars — he in one, Monica and her daughter in another, and Carmen and Armando in the third — and drove down the ridge for safety as burning trees fell into the road around them.

When the Ocons reached the bottom, they learned that Carmen and Armando’s car was nowhere to be found.

As the family would learn later, Carmen and Armando had become trapped by a fallen tree during the drive. Unable to move past it, they exited their car and made their way back up to the house where, as Monica told CNN, “They went hand in hand, together, and jumped into the pool.”

In the pool, Carmen and Armando clung to one another, poking their mouths and noses out of the water to try to breathe and hanging onto the pool’s pipping hot brick sides. They prayed together as propane tanks exploded around them, one even burning Armando’s hand. “They were a team,” Luis told CNN. “They counted on each other.”

They had relied on another another during difficult times before in the 60 years they had known one another. Growing up in Cuba, each had fled the island nation separately in the 1950s, The San Francisco Chronicle reported, exchanging letters and phone calls while apart.

Eventually they would settle in southern California, the paper continued, where they raised their three children including daughter Monica, daughter Carmen T. Berriz and son Armando J. Berriz.

Still in the pool, Carmen and Armando held on as the fire destroyed the house in the forested cul-de-sac through the long hours of the night. Sadly, though, the smoky air would eventually choke Carmen’s lungs. “My mom’s breath didn’t have the stamina to make it any more,” Monica told CNN, saying her mom died around 7 a.m. — just as the worst of the inferno has passed.

Armando was there by her side the entire time, only leaving to find safety after hours later after the fire died down. “Everything they did was as a team,” Monica told The San Francisco Chronicle.  “They had this bond and this strength that literally lasted a lifetime.”

“It was her lungs that failed her,” Monica added to the paper, telling them her mother had always had lung problems. “But she did what it took to get through the worst. She didn’t give up.”

While separated, Luis had attempted to head back up to find his in-laws, his wife and daughter now seeking sanctuary at a friends house, he told CNN. But the fires forced him to turn back. After some time, he and Monica left fearing the worse.

Armando would later escape, making his way down the 2 mile ridge to safety, CNN reported. He and his family were reunited later at the hospital where he was being treated for severe burns.

“He’s a strong 76,” Monica told CNN of her father, who recounted his story to his kids. “It’s amazing.”

“My father-in-law is a hero,” added Luis to The San Francisco Chronicle.

Women Escapes Las Vegas Shooting Only to Have Her House Burned Down in California Wildfires a Week Later

by Dave Quinn @ PEOPLE.com

Michella Flores is a true survivor.

The 51-year-old California resident survived two tragedies in just over one week — first the horrific shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas on Oct. 1 that left 58 country music fans dead and injured 527 others, and then the California wildfires that have taken the lives of at least 31 so far a week later at on Oct. 8.

“Last Sunday, I was running from bullets,” Flores told Fox-KTVU. “This Sunday, I was running from fire.”

Fighting fire, is more like it. Flores —who has been a firefighter, a paramedic and she now works part-time as a flight attendant and as a customer service representative at Kaiser Air in Santa Rosa — told the news station she grabbed a garden hose alongside firefights to try to keep the flames from engulfing her parent’s house in Santa Rosa. (Flores had been staying with her parents as she prepared for a move to a different part of the city.)

RELATED VIDEO: Northern California Wildfires

By 4:30 a.m., she finally gave up. The house was totally destroyed, with Flores and her parents losing all of her belongings including a special bike she loved. Her parents, who are both in their 70s, will likely now move to Idaho, according to Flores.

Despite the two tragedies, Flores tells the news station that she’s holding it together.

“I was really shook up after Vegas. I was shaking and I couldn’t calm down,” Flores said. “When I was fighting the fire at my house, I was more in a ‘task’ mode, and so I compartmentalized it.”

When a Door Closes

We have a big announcement to make.

We're moving!

As you may or may not know, our current address includes the indicator of "Suite B1". And yes, "B" stands for basement. (But to be fair, this isn't the dark, spider-filled basement that nightmares are made of...as far as basements go, this one is pretty suite ;) We've enjoyed our time here, and we like the location. But it's time to go.

So you are probably wondering where we're going?

Someplace warm or on a beach?

Someplace right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the CLE?

Well, no. Like we said, we kind of like our location so we figured, why ruin a good thing?

Which is why we're moving .2 miles away. That's right, you'll barely have to adjust your GPS.

We are already starting to settle in, but once the move is complete (by the end of May) our new address will be 33549 Solon Rd., Solon, OH 44139. Same phone, same fax, same email. Just a new addy.

You know what they say, when a door closes a window opens. We might be closing the door on Suite B1, but for sure we'll open the windows at 33549 Solon Rd.

Because we can! The new space has windows!

We'll let you know when we're all settled in so you can come visit. And breathe the fresh air.

Back to Basics

by @ WRIS Web Services

Today, creating a successful website is a skill in its own right. Not only do you need a great graphic design, you also have to consider usability, speed, mobile-friendliness, optimization, analytics, functionality...the list goes on and on. But at its core, a website serves a purpose for an audience. The purpose may vary, as will the audience, but the ultimate goal remains the same. Provide that audience with a successful online experience. And sometimes it’s easy to overlook some of the most basic requirements needed to do that.

Talk to your Audience.

Who do you want to visit your site? Whoever that is, you need to know them. Understand why they are coming to your site and then provide them with that in the appropriate manner. Are they students or senior citizens? Are they tech-savvy or still using a flip-phone? Will they be coming to your site familiar with what you do or will you be their introduction? Don’t alienate them from the homepage with an award-winning design that’s not a winner for your audience. Instead, make sure they feel welcome and eager to delve deeper into your site. It’s important for you to like your site, of course, but more important for your customers to like it.

Be Honest.

Okay, so you’re probably not going to outright lie to your customers on purpose. But sometimes a marketing effort can go awry if your audience feels like you’re trying to pull the wool over their eyes. There’s a fine line between tooting your own horn and being blatantly arrogant. Promote your accomplishments and the things you do well, but don’t overstate your case. Display your products but either use your own images or find some that are realistic. And don’t make promises you can’t keep. Honesty really is the best policy.

Tell your Story.

Content Marketing is important. Keywords are important. Text optimized for search engines is important. But the most important purpose of the content of your site is to provide your site visitors with information. So while yes, you should do what you can to make sure your content is search engine friendly, you also want it to be interesting and readable.

Use your Analytics.

Assuming you’ve done all of the above and launched your site, you now have one important step left to do: Don’t sit back and relax. Analytics are meant to be used, so use them! If the numbers indicate people are leaving your site too quickly, or never making it past the homepage, pay attention! And don’t be overwhelmed, if you’d rather not deal with statistics like this (or just aren’t comfortable doing it), hire a professional who can decipher the information and help you take the right next-steps.

Keep Changing.

Websites are not a ‘one and done’ deal. You can’t launch a site and expect an overnight improvement in sales or calls. Your site will constantly be evolving and growing and changing and that’s normal. Just when you think you have it ‘perfect’, you’ll find something else you want to add or change or improve. But that’s what will help you keep your site interesting and effective, and your audience will appreciate it.

Famed ‘Welcome to Key West’ Sign Found 300 Miles Away From Its Original Home

by Alexia Fernandez @ PEOPLE.com

Key West will still be paradise.

Following Hurricane Irma‘s rampage toward the U.S. island, the city’s residents will gain back their famous “Welcome to Key West” sign, which was as much a part of their lives as the ocean.

The sign was found about 300 miles away from where it was supposed to be early Thursday in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, according to The Miami Herald.

WINK News reported the sign was found and dropped off at the Key West Express docking station by an unidentified couple. Crew members at the station shipped it back home at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

The sign was an $8,000 gift from the local rotary club, according to the Associated Press.

WINK News reporter, John Treirweiler, tweeted that while the sign may have been recovered and on its way back home, residents of the island had fashioned a hand-made sign to welcome visitors.

Hurricane Irma made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 storm that left millions of people without power on both coasts of the state.

Courtney Love Warned Women Not to Go to Harvey Weinstein’s Hotel Room Back in 2005

Courtney Love Warned Women Not to Go to Harvey Weinstein’s Hotel Room Back in 2005

by Dave Quinn @ PEOPLE.com

Over a decade before some of Hollywood’s biggest stars came out to accuse disgraced Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment, The People vs. Larry Flint star Courtney Love warned up-and-coming actress of his bad behavior.

In an interview from the red carpet of the Comedy’s Central’s 2005 roast of Pamela Anderson, Love was asked by comedian Natasha Leggero what advice she has for young women trying to make it in Hollywood.

“Ummm… I’ll get libeled if I say it,” Love, 53, says at first in video of the chat unearthed by TMZ.

She then stops hesitating. “If Harvey Weinstein invites you to a private party in his Four Seasons , don’t go,” says Love.

Her words have new meaning as actresses like Cara DelevingneGwyneth Paltrow, Eva Green and more have all accused Weinstein of making sexual advances towards them during business meanings in hotel rooms.

A rep for Love did not immediately respond to a request for comment but the musician-turned-actress did address the newly unearthed video on Twitter, saying that she “wasn’t one of his victims.” A rep for Weinstein did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

RELATED: The Harvey Weinstein Scandal — All of the Hollywood Figures Who Have Spoken Out Against Movie Mogul

Weinstein’s scandal began when eight women including Ashely Judd spoke out against him in a bombshell New York Times report published Oct. 5., where they accused the mogul of sexual misconduct. The paper also reported that Weinstein reached private settlements with eight women, including actress Rose McGowan.

Following the initial report, Weinstein said in a statement that he was working with therapists and planned to “deal with this issue head-on.” He has since been fired from his powerhouse studio, the Weinstein Company, and his wife, Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, has announced she’s leaving him.

“My heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions. I have chosen to leave my husband. Caring for my young children is my first priority and I ask the media for privacy at this time,” Chapman said in a statement to PEOPLE.
